School Vision

Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected.

From the Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,

NAPLAN Testing

NAPLAN tests are used to measure the educational attainment of students across Australia. They give the school system information about the overall level of student achievement in literacy and numeracy.

NAPLAN testing will occur next week for students in Years 3 and 5. Below is some advice from the NAPLAN website…

“NAPLAN is not a test that children can prepare for in the same way they might prepare for an end of term test. NAPLAN tests skills that develop and improve over time. These are skills that should be continuously developed throughout the year and not just in the lead-up to NAPLAN.

The best way to get your child ready for NAPLAN is to continue to develop literacy and numeracy skills. Your child’s teacher will be able to give you advice on how to help encourage development of these skills at home.”

https://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/parent-carer-support/preparing-for-naplan

It is important that students do not become anxious about NAPLAN testing. Students will perform better if they feel relaxed and confident that they can do their best. If children express concern about NAPLAN tests parents can help by reminding them that NAPLAN is only a measurement of their current ability. The test provides a snapshot of where a child is at (one point in the whole learning experience). The main point of the test is to help us know where to focus our teaching so that the very best learning gains take place.

Parents can also help by ensuring students have healthy eating and sleeping routines in the days prior to each test. A good routine and healthy habits will produce relaxed children who can concentrate and do their best. Parents are reminded that students cannot ‘study’ for NAPLAN tests so last minute cramming or tutoring will not produce better results.

Waste Wise

Our school is in the process of renewing its accreditation as a Waste Wise school. At the end of Term 1 an audit was conducted of school waste. The most significant items that were found (by weight) were:

  • Fruit & vegetable scraps (38%)
  • Food scraps (31%)
  • General rubbish (12%)

The school will be developing strategies to reduce the waste that we generate on a daily basis. We encourage parents to reflect on how student lunches are packaged so as to reduce waste.

Introducing Our School Board

Survey data collected in 2017 indicated that the community would like to know more about our School Board and its members. For this reason we will be introducing each School Board member to you in our newsletters throughout 2017. I would like to start by introducing our newest member – Mark Paulton.

“Originally a migrant from Malawi but educated in the UK, I then moved to Australia in 2007, and settled in Madeley in 2011. We have 2 children enrolled at Madeley Primary School since 2015 who are in Year 1 and Kindy.

Professionally I am a commercial contracts, project and supply manager with significant experience negotiating, implementing and managing large-scale contracts across the oil & gas, mining, civil construction and telecommunications industries in Australia and internationally. I currently work for South32 in Perth, and am also a Western Australian Justice of the Peace.

In being a member of the Board at Madeley I hope to bring a vision of my experiences of diversity inclusion from my background and also leverage any possible community benefits as an extension of my work as a JP to date.

Further I hope to contribute my professional expertise to assist in the running of a smooth, cost efficient and forward looking school, with a vision on technology, science and engineering basics to our next generation of minds.”

We welcome Mark to the Board and look forward to his work with us over the next few years.

Involvement in School by Parents and Carers

The following statement can be found on the Department of Education website. We encourage parents and carers to talk with teachers about how you can be actively involved in your child’s schooling.

“You can participate in school life, both formally and informally, through the Parents and Citizens Association, school council, helping in the classroom or volunteering.

Make a special effort to attend your child’s class assemblies, parent-teacher meetings, sports days, open days, musical and other activities. This will help them feel positive about school and be a happy, active participant. When you volunteer you show your child that you care about their school life.

Research shows that when parents are involved with their children’s schooling, it has a positive effect on the child’s performance.

If you are a working parent and feel you have limited time to help or be involved at school, talk to your child’s teacher(s) about ways you could help out. Involve your child in the activity.”

https://www.education.wa.edu.au/web/at-school/supporting-childrens-learning/participating-at-school

Attached to this newsletter is a publication provided by the Department of Education which outlines the process for talking with our school when you have an enquiry or concern. At Madeley we ask that you talk with your child’s teacher first. If you are still concerned or have not received an answer to your query you should talk with one of our Deputy Principals: Mrs Lainie Beccegato (Kindergarten to Year 2) or Ms Danielle Stitfold (Year 3 to 6). If you are still concerned (after talking with these people) you are welcome to make a time to talk with me.

Reading at Home

One of the most powerful things you can do to help your child improve academically is to encourage them to read. Reading improves when you do it more often. Please spend time modelling reading to your children and reading with your children. Attached to this newsletter is a fact sheet (especially for parents of Year 1 and 2 students) with more ideas about helping your child become a stronger reader.

Have great weekend everyone

Ashdale Secondary College Theatre
$10 per ticket
Tickets go on sale Monday 29th May (two per family only)

We are very excited and have been busy choreographing our items in preparation for the whole school production. This year our production will involve all students from Year One to Year Six. This Production is our opportunity to show off how talented the students of Madeley PS are. This year we have an entertaining original script full of cheesy jokes, familiar characters and plenty of dance songs.

Does my child need to be at both shows?

Yes. We need every student at both shows for the choreography. If you are not in the audience you can drop off and collect your student so they can perform their item. See individual class information, closer to the show, for more details.

Is there a dress rehearsal?

Yes Students will need their complete costume for Monday 12th June as we are bussing to Ashdale Secondary College for a full dress rehearsal. This will also give students an opportunity to see the entire show with full lights and sound. Permission slips for this event will be sent home soon.

What about tickets?

Tickets will go on sale in Week Six, 29th May. Every family will be allocated two tickets to ensure every student has someone in the audience. Any remaining tickets will be released on a first come basis in Week Seven. If you require more tickets due to family circumstance please let the ladies in the front office know. To help cover costs we will be selling tickets for $10 each.

What does my child need to wear?

Every class is different.

Mrs Price - Every class is different. Your child is in the opening scene and needs to wear a plain red or plain blue tee shirt and black pants/leggings and skirt. We will be adding accessories to complete the outfit.

Mrs Caple and Mrs Malland - Every class is different. Your child is in the opening scene and needs to wear red, orange and/or yellow.  Girls -  will be supplied with a tutu so we recommend they wear black leggings.  Boys -  will have a poncho so red/orange/yellow or black bottoms is fine.   We will be adding accessories to complete the outfit.

Miss Stokoe and Mrs Burkett - Every class is different. Your child is in the opening scene and needs to wear a plain white t-shirt. Boys need to wear jeans and white socks, any shoes. Girls will be supplied with a skirt so shorts are recommended for a quick change, white socks and have their hair in a high pony tail.

Mrs Phillips and Mrs Barnes - Every class is different. Your child is in the second scene. Boys -  Think heavy metal so jeans, flannel shirt or  a black t-shirt with maybe a bandana. Girls - Are to wear a black singlet/tank top and black leggings. They will be in bare feet.

Mrs Kirov and Mrs Villar - Every class is different. Your child is in the third scene and needs to wear orange, brown and/or yellow pants with any t- shirt. Your child will be supplied with a jacket. Girls will be supplied with a tutu so we recommend they wear black leggings.   We will be adding accessories to complete the outfit.

Miss Dunbar - Every class is different. Your child is in the third scene and needs to wear an out fit to suit their group. Some parts of your child’s costume maybe supplied, please ask them or email me for more information.

Mr Eddison - Every class is different. Your child is in the third scene and needs to wear a black or dark t-shirt and shorts/pants as we will be suppling a jumpsuit  to wear on top. Students may want to add a back pack to their out fit and they will also need a torch, please just something cheap with their name on it. Thank you for your ongoing support!

Miss Pirga - Every class is different. Your child is in the third scene and needs to wear shorts and a singlet/tank top without a print or pattern on it, a pale colour or white is preferred. We will be suppling a tunic and a headpiece. Girls may want to add their own jewellery and make up.

Mr Kuenen - Every class is different. Your child is in the fourth scene and needs to be dressed as a mummy or a zombie. Think ripped grubby clothes. Please destroy some old clothes rather than spend money on a costume. We will have face paint but feel free to do make up at home before the show. Thank you for your ongoing support!

Miss Visser - Every class is different. Your child is in the fourth scene and needs to be dressed for a formal or a ball. Boys in black or dark pants, white shirt and tie/bow tie. Girls can go to town with prettiness and frills, think flower girl.

Mrs Chester and Mr Taddei - Every class is different. Your child is in the finale scene. Please ask them for information of their individual costumes.

Science

“If you could 3D print something which would make a difference to your school or community, what would it be?”

One day you may have an opportunity to do this.

Put on your thinking hats and think about the future of your school, your community and your Earth.

People across the globe are coming up with ideas to make our world more sustainable and to ensure that future generations can continue to live in it.

If you could help, what would you do? Maybe you’re not ready to think about the whole world yet but what could you do to make a difference at Madeley or in your local community? What would you need to make that difference?

We have an opportunity to ‘win’ a 3D printer for the school. This would be a great asset to add to our STEM resources but, to do this, we need your help. We need you to have a think and to answer the question above.

When you’ve come up with your idea, write it on a piece of paper.

Add your NAME and your CLASS and put it in the box in the front office labelled “Circuit Breaker 3D Printer” by Wednesday 17th May.

There are no personal rewards in this competition other than the good feeling you get from being able to say you helped to achieve something for your school. If we win though, you may get the chance to design and 3D print.
