School Vision
Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected.
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,
Term 1 in Review
First Term has come and gone so quickly and everyone is looking forward to a well-earned rest. The term commenced with the opening of Carnaby Rise Primary School which has now joined our very successful Ashdale Cluster of schools. Our student leaders have been very busy organising and running various activities around the school such as our sustainability initiatives. They also participated in a very popular training day. We had a strong focus on helping students understand bullying and how to address it and participated in the National Day of Action Against Bullying. Students enjoyed some wonderful events such as the Making Friends Incursion, Harmony Day, WA Police Pipe Band and today’s ANZAC Day ceremony.
The P&C met twice and organised our highly successful Easter on the Green. They raised additional funds through a sausage sizzle and cake stall at the State Election. Our School Board had its first meeting and we welcomed new members including Mark Paulton (parent), Clare Barnes (staff), Sally Price (staff) and Karin Villemin-Bolt (staff). Paul Thomas also took over as the School Board Chair. We look forward to the ongoing work of the Board as we move through 2017 and beyond.
All up, it has been a wonderful term!
Easter on the Green
This year’s event was amazing! We want to thank all the hard work of our P&C, our staff and students who contributed and everyone who came along and supported the school on the night. We also want to recognise the businesses and groups that sponsored this year’s event. A complete list can be found on Carolyne’s April 1 post on the P&C Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/madeleypandc/
“The preliminary tally is in and we made over $10,500 for the school! $3365 for the classroom stalls and $7141 for the P&C. We also have more donations coming in next week which is fantastic, all in all a very successful night!”
Canteen
The ladies in our Canteen do an amazing job week in and week out and we thank them for their efforts. This week you would have received a post on Connect from our P&C stating that the canteen needs more support if it is to remain viable. Please check out the Connect notification, consider how you can help and let the relevant people know. Many thanks go to the parents who have already made comments or indicated their willingness to help out on the Connect notification.
School Board
At last week’s School Board meeting we welcomed our new Board Chair as well as new parent and staff members. During the meeting the 2016 Annual Report was discussed. The Annual Report was sent out via Connect and is now posted on the school website and Department Portal. The Board also talked about the One to One Program, LOTE and Connect. The Minutes of the meeting will be posted onto the school website. Parents are always welcome to come along to Board meetings to see and hear what we do. The next meeting is scheduled for June 21 at 5:30pm.
Connect
We have had a lot of positive feedback regarding the use of Connect since it was introduced a few weeks ago. The website and app have provided new ways that communication between home and school can occur. Over the next few months you will begin to see that the Connect School Space is our main tool for communication so it is essential that you have it set up and working. If you are not sure about this please contact the school office. Support documents are attached once again to this newsletter.
The school will be working with teachers to help them develop ways that Connect can be used in their classrooms. Some teachers are already using Connect. Please talk to your child’s teacher about whether they will be using Connect this year.
Holidays
The staff would like to wish all of our students and their families a safe and happy school holiday. We ask that parents keep an eye on our school over the holidays and report any suspicious activity to Education Security on 92644632 or the Police on 131444. School returns on Monday April 24.
Have a great weekend everyone.

Our Anzac service was held on Friday 7th April to commemorate 102 years since the Gallipoli campaign. It was a beautiful and moving ceremony run by a confident group of Year 6 students.
Among the invited guests were The Honourable Dr Anne Aly MP and Councillors Zappa, Simpkins, Treby and Nguyen. The ceremony was also attended by The Principal of Ashdale Secondary College and representatives from the Madeley School Board and P&C.
The guest speaker was Flight Lieutenant Shannon Monk from the RAAF Base Pearce. Her heart warming speech was well received by all who attended the ceremony.
Following a flag procession that included the Australian, Aboriginal and New Zealand flags, 20 doves were released to represent the symbol of peace.

WHAT TO WEAR:
Children are to wear full school uniform with their bathers underneath their uniform to school at the beginning of the day. Students are encouraged to wear thongs or sandals to the pool but must also bring shoes to get changed into when they get back to school. Please write your child’s name clearly on all items (school uniform, bathers, goggles, thongs etc). Lost property will be placed outside the undercovered area.
WHAT TO BRING:
A plastic bag with child’s name clearly marked on the bag.
Put underclothes and towel in the plastic bag with name clearly marked on ALL items.
Swimming goggles are permitted (not essential), but no snorkelling goggles please.
Long hair must be tied back and no jewellery is to be worn.
AT THE POOL:
Children will change out of wet bathers at the pool, but time does not permit children to shower (unless a medical condition exists, please inform the class teacher if this is the case). Staff will supervise students in the change rooms and encourage all students to be independent and change themselves at the pool. Please note that group 7 will need to get straight on the bus with their towel wrapped around them at the end of their lesson due to time constraints and PP students will get changed back at school and not in the change rooms – please see your PP teacher for further information.
PLEASE NOTE:
If children do not attend two or more lessons the school can only refund the cost of entry to the pool for those days ($3 per day). The bus fare cannot be refunded as the money is paid in advance to the Bus Company as a group booking and the Bus Company does not give refunds. A refund for pool entry will not be given unless a medical certificate has been provided.
SWIMMING STAGE
In the first week you may receive a note informing you that your child has been placed in a different stage to the one written on the form. This can be due to a number of reasons including: Your child has not swum in 12 months so needs to re-learn certain skills, your child isn’t displaying the correct technique for their stage or perhaps they were placed in the incorrect stage to begin with. If you have any queries please put it in writing and give it to the class teacher.
SWIMMING CERTIFICATES
Whilst it is important for students to try their best and set a goal, passing their swimming stage is not the most important thing. Endeavouring to improve and the learning of a vital life skill are the two things we should all focus on. When your child receives their certificate, compare it to last years and acknowledge their effort and improvement rather than asking “did you pass”?
Thankyou
Ms Kekula (PE Teacher)

RED & BLUE Kindy
This term, Red and Blue Kindy, have been learning about the five senses. The children have enjoyed various activities such as painting with spices, collage with herbs and cooking. We loved taking part in a senses walk, which involved the children removing their shoes and stepping into trays filled with bumpy, hard, squishy, smooth, rough, soft, cold and sticky things. The children had so much fun and especially liked the cooked pasta and shaving foam! After we had washed our feet we talked about the many words we could use to describe how our feet felt during the walk. Thank you to all the parents who stayed to help.

School Chaplain
In Term 2 I'm looking forward to beginning in Ms Phillips class with The Incredible Flexible You Curriculum. It is designed to help young learners develop skills they need to be flexible social thinkers and social problem solvers. Students will learn about the social mind, social expectations, their own thinking and that of others, to help them make better decisions when in the midst of social play and interaction.
We do this by teaching Michelle Garcia Winner's social thinking concepts and vocabulary at the Year 2 level. The program will be facilitated over 5 weeks during class time. For more information on the program visit the link below.
