School Vision
Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected.
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,
Just Imagine
Image what the world would be like if the Golden Rule was adopted by everyone on the planet. If everyone got up in the morning with a desire to ‘treat others the way they want to be treated’ we would see a very different world than what we do today. Imagine if people actively practiced ‘patience’ and ‘kindness’ and looked for positive ways to solve the problems they have with others rather than resorting to verbal or physical violence. That would be a world worth pursuing. Some argue that this idea is too ‘pie in the sky’ and will ‘never happen’. Perhaps this is true, but at Madeley Primary School we believe it is still worth the effort.
Here at Madeley we believe that it is worth the effort to teach children to treat others with kindness and respect even when this is not reciprocated. We believe that our moral imperative is to help children care about themselves, about others and about the community and world in which they live. We believe that teaching students to be responsible for what they say and do is important and that they can learn to think and act in ways that benefit themselves and their community. We believe in giving every child multiple opportunities to ‘get it wrong’ and then to use these ‘failures’ as a stepping stone for learning. This applies to the learning of behaviour just as much as to curriculum areas like English and Mathematics.
Is this job of ours easy? Will it result in instantly changed behaviour? The short answer is ‘of course not’. Adults and children alike come with beliefs, feelings, negative thought patterns and behaviours which are a result of their life experience as well as their genetics. Changing behaviour begins with addressing beliefs and the thinking around these beliefs. When we fail to believe what is true than we will think the wrong things. Errant thinking results in feelings which in turn impact on how we behave. Our approach to ‘behaviour management’ involves ‘positive education’ where students are counselled through behavioural difficulties. We prefer not to use a ‘carrot and stick’ approach (rewarding students for behavioural compliance or handing out quick and easy punishments for failure) as this does little to teach and modify behaviour.
If you would like more information or to talk about our approach please feel free to make a time to chat with me.
Communication
It is essential that the communication channels between home and school are open and well maintained. This term we have held an Information Night and a number of classes have conducted additional information sessions for parents. We have also introduced the Madeley Primary School Space on Connect which provides an online tool for regular communication and discussion. In the past 7 days the School Space has had the following activity:
- 42 parents have viewed Notices that were posted with 6 comments being made
- 29 parents have viewed items placed in the Library
- 57 parents have viewed discussions that have been posted with 6 comments being made
There are 615 parents currently subscribed to the School Space on Connect which indicates that only around 9% have accessed the site in the past 7 days. In the interests of open and regular communication the school strongly recommends that every parent gets to know the Connect site and checks it on a weekly basis. There is also a Connect Now app available which will send you push notifications whenever something is posted. It also allows you to comment on posts. Please be involved by being informed. Attached to this newsletter is a brochure about Connect and the Connect Now app.

The Importance of Diet to School erformance
A quick Google search using the above title will give you a vast amount of information around the importance of diet and nutrition when it comes to school performance. Below is a link to one interesting article. The information in the article speaks for itself….
http://articles.extension.org/pages/68774/3-ways-nutrition-influences-student-learning-potential-and-school-performance
http://articles.extension.org/pages/68774/3-ways-
nutrition-influences-student-learning-potential-and
-school-performance
- “…nutritional status can directly affect mental capacity among school-aged children.”
- “Good nutrition helps students show up at school prepared to learn.”
- “…malnutrition leads to behaviour problems, and that sugar has a negative impact on child behaviour.”
- “…Researchers generally find that a higher quality diet is associated with better performance…”
Our students need to come to school being well nourished. When they are at school they need appropriate food so that they have the best opportunity to concentrate and behave appropriately. What you pack in your child’s lunchbox is one of the many ways that you help them to learn and achieve their best.
Community Chest Darch SUPA IGA
We would like to say a big Thank You to Darch Supa IGA who have kindly donated $1,000 from their Community Chest to go towards Madeley Primary School Nature Play Area.
Hand, Foot and Mouth (HFMD)
A number of schools across the northern suburbs have reported an increased number of students with HFMD. We have had a number of reported cases of HFMD at our school this year.
For more information please refer to document below.
Have a great weekend everyone.

Fathering Project- Madeley Champion Dads
Weekly Tip: Plan your school involvement for the upcoming school year
During the early start of the school year, schools including our very own Madeley Primary, will be asking parents to volunteer their time for many roles, including serving on canteen, assisting teachers in the classroom, helping at events etc. This is a great chance to sit down with your children and agree with them what you will volunteer for, and how often.
Kids love seeing dad at school, even if it is only occasionally. Map out with your children at the start of the year what you will volunteer for (canteen, events, classroom assistant, etc.) and how often (once a term, say). Possibly block the dates out in your diary once the roster is finalised and enjoy these special times with your children.
- As well as being a treat for your children, volunteering in this way is a great way to get to know other parents at the school and to see at first-hand how the school operates
- Ask your child to introduce his or her friends to you
- Say hi to your child’s teacher
At this year’s Easter on the Green, we are hopeful a few Dads may be able to lend a hand on the Friday 31st before the night begins.
We'll need an electrician at 12.30pm to look at our power options then and need assistance again at around 4.30pm to sign off our electrical form from council.
We have a few other tasks as part of set up which include the removal of fencing and BBQ set up, and relocating a couple of heavy items to make parking a bit safer etc.
We'll also need help with pack down - putting rubbish in bins, packing away tables & the BBQ and helping the production guys pack down their stuff (they don't need help with setting up).
If you think you may be able to give a hand, please make your way down to the school at around 1pm next Friday for a couple of hours and come meet a few new faces from the group.
For useful weekly tips, we currently have a Facebook Page- "Madeley Champion Dads Fathering Project" and we also encourage people to also like and follow "The Fathering Project" which is the support behind our group.
Did you know that the Madeley P&C has a Facebook group? Please look us up at “Madeley P&C” to join and keep up to date with the latest P&C information.
