From the Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

Connect

At Madeley Primary we are trying to establish multiple ways in which parents and community members can communicate with our school. For this reason I am pleased to announce that the Connect ‘School Space’ is being implemented in our school. Connect is an integrated online environment developed by the Department of Education WA for staff, students and parents in public schools. The ‘School Space’ on Connect will provide another way for us to share information about events, activities, policy and procedures as well as promote discussion and obtain feedback from parents and carers.

How will parents access Connect?

Next week each parent/carer will be given their own secure login to Connect. Connect is totally free and, because it is provided by the Department of Education, very safe. As well as being able to login to Connect on any internet-enabled device, you may also receive notices from Connect that will be sent to you as either an email or a notification on your phone. A free app called Connect Now can be downloaded from Google Play or the Apple App Store and will let you receive Connect notices as push notifications.

If you have multiple children you only need one login – even if your children attend different public schools.

A few of the teachers at our school already use Connect as part of their teaching and learning programs. This will provide parents and carers with varying degrees of information depending on how the teacher chooses to use Connect with their class. Teachers who use Connect will keep you informed about ways it will be implemented in their classroom. Check out the short video clip below

http://vimeo.com/102803473

We hope that you enjoy the Connect experience and see it as an exciting new way for you to stay in touch with your child’s school journey.

After School Play

Earlier this week another injury occurred to a child while playing on school playground equipment after the final siren. As the person who is responsible for the safety of everyone who is on the school site I take these incidents very seriously. While we are fully aware that injuries can take place whenever children play it is essential that adequate supervision and care is provided while on school grounds and using school equipment. Last year a letter was sent home to all parents outlining the rules for students and parents who chose to remain on the school site to socialise and play. These rules have been updated and are provided below.

  1. Children must be under direct (line of site) supervision of their parent/carer.
  2. No ball games are to be played inside the school fence. The oval is available for ball games.
  3. Regular school rules and common sense apply during play:
    - No running on paved areas
    - No climbing or standing on the top of equipment
    - Safe and sensible play always
    - No throwing of sand or moving of sand outside the play area
  4. Parents are responsible for monitoring and controlling play to ensure it is safe
  5. Under no circumstances are children or adults permitted to re-enter buildings after school. This includes the use of toilets.
  6. Behavioural issues that occur as a result of students remaining onsite are the responsibility of the parent/carer.
  7. The Kindergarten/Pre-primary play area rules include:
    i. Students are not permitted to use any portable/loose equipment
ii. The nature play space is out of bounds to all students
    iii. No chasey
iv. No running on the pavement
    v. No water to be taken from the drink fountains
vi. No climbing up the slide
vii. Only 4 in the cubby at a time

Hats

New students and those who have been using a cap have now been provided a free broad-brimmed hat from the school. These hats offer the best sun protection and are recommend by the Cancer Council. Lost hats can be replaced by purchasing through the Uniform Shop.

Facebook

Madeley Primary School promotes open communication between school and home. There are various avenues for communication to take place depending on its intent and purpose. The school Facebook page exists as a means of sharing school information and activities with the community. Its main purpose is to build community understanding and promote school spirit by highlighting all the great things that are being done here. Facebook is not the forum for raising and discussing issues, problems, concerns and/or disagreements that may occur or for discussing school policy and procedures. School staff are always available to work through issues or concerns or to discuss school policy via face to face meetings. Attached to this newsletter is a ‘Code of Conduct’ for the use of our school Facebook page.

Bullying

This year we are focussing on raising community awareness of bullying, what it is, its various forms and how it can be managed in a positive way. While we don’t find that bullying is a widespread problem at Madeley we know that it occurs from time to time. Our belief is that bullying is never okay. Our biggest challenge around bullying is helping students and parents accurately recognise it. ‘Bullying’ is regularly used to explain any altercation or disagreement that occurs between students. With further investigation most reported incidents do not constitute bullying. Below are links to videos that have been shared with students at our past two mini-assemblies. Our teachers will also promote regular discussion with students around this topic and subsequent newsletters will contain information for parents. Additional information can be found below.

Literacy and Numeracy Support Program

As part of the Literacy and Numeracy Support Program some year three students have been working hard to improve their Literacy and Numeracy Skills. During our Numeracy sessions we have been revising three digit numbers. We worked as a group to sort three digit numbers from least to greatest value and then tested our skills by ordering them from greatest to least!

In our Reading groups we have been investigating different text types and identifying the purpose of each. As a team we then had to sort and match each text type to its correct purpose. The students all did a fantastic job!

School Banking

Get involved in the School Banking program.

Madeley Primary is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students.

School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards.

The rewards available during 2017 are:

  • Cyber Handball
  • Colour Change Markers
  • 3D Chalk Set
  • Tablet Case
  • Smiley Emoji Keyring
  • Volt Handball
  • Pencil + Tech Case
  • Epic Earphones

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives $5 when a student makes their first ever School Banking deposit and 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit).

Getting involved in School Banking is easy!

All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:

1 – Online
Visit the link below and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.

https://www.commbank.com.au/personal/kids/school-banking.html

2 - In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.

If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.

School Banking day is Wednesday morning. Each week you need to bring your money and deposit book to the library (side entrance) from 8:30am.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2017 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit the link below.

School Psychologist

My name is Jedda Crow and I am excited to be joining Madeley Primary School in the role of School Psychologist. My role is to provide specialist support to school staff in the area of student behavior, learning, and mental health and well-being. I have worked in North Metropolitan area schools since 2009, and in schools in the South Metropolitan area before that. I completed my Doctorate in 2015, researching a topic that spurred a particular interest in children’s development of empathy and social conscience. I am looking forward to getting to know the Madeley School community.

School Chaplain

Hello Madeley Primary Community,

I am excited to be here as your chaplain this year. My name is Tosari Thomas, I have been a chaplain for a year and previously worked as a youth worker for five years. I really enjoy working with children, young people and families and being a listening ear. I have a husband and a baby who is nine months old. We have lots of fun and love going to the beach together. I look forward to meeting more and more families and staff each Thursday. A Chaplain is someone to talk to and confide in through the good and the bad. If you or your child would like to speak to the chaplain please contact Ms Stitfold.

Kind regards and let's make it a great term!

Fathering Project 2017

The Fathering Project’s Schools’ Program aims to positively promote the important role of fathers, and father figures, to the entire school community through the formation of our “Madeley Champion Dads Fathering Project’ group.

This is a group of dads from our school that has been created to be an enjoyable, social group that builds interaction, knowledge and skills of fathers, and father figures, but most importantly is an opportunity for dads to get together in a relaxed, informal environment and this year we would like to increase our current numbers and welcome all our new dads to the school and even some existing dads to take part.

This core group of dads, “Champion” Dads or father figures, will be running activities in the school community throughout the year ahead. We are not “Champion” Dads because we are perfect dads but because we are committed to championing the need for being better dads for the sake of our kids, our partners and the Madeley community.

We currently have a Facebook Page- "Madeley Champion Dads Fathering Project" and we also encourage people to also like and follow "The Fathering Project" which is the support behind our group.

At this stage our Facebook Group is our main source of communication however it will evolve over the year to better provide you with opportunities to be involved and informed of activities this year.

We will be sending fortnightly tips and hints along with call outs to lend a hand at our school events and around the school community where needed.

If you would like any more information please feel free to contact me, peterwithnell@hotmail.com or send a message via our Facebook page.

Information about the Safety House program

The Safety House program first commenced in the zone of Wooranna Park Primary School, North Dandenong, Victoria in 1979. In Western Australia, Warriapendi Primary School, Balga commenced the Safety House program in July 1983 and Lesmurdie Primary School commenced in November 1983. Many more primary schools in the Perth metropolitan and WA country areas have become involved in the Safety House program since then.

The Safety House Association of Western Australia Inc. was set up in October 1983 and is an Incorporated Association with full support and co-operation from the WA Department of Education and the Western Australian Police.

Interested In Becoming A Safety House?

What do Safety House people do?

The role of the Safety Householder is to assist young children in need of help by just being a “Good Neighbour” to them. Making them feel safe and supported and helping them to get in touch with their parents, school or whatever other help they might need. In non-emergency situations such as bullied, frightened or lost children, the Safety House person will contact the child’s parents or school whilst reassuring and calming the child. In emergency situations the Safety House person will call the child’s parents and the Police or emergency services whilst giving support and protection to the child.

** please note Madeley Primary School does not currently have a Safety house program **
