School Vision

Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected.

From the Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

Community Surveys

In our last newsletter I talked about the Parent Surveys which were completed earlier this term. Information about parent perception in relation to the School Board, Positive Education Program and school communication was presented. As part of our annual process of surveying the community we also gather information from staff and students. Together these surveys presented us with some useful information about community perception in relation to the strengths of our school as well as possible areas we can improve. There is a strong belief in our community that the school has high expectations for student achievement, that students like being at our school and that the school environment is well maintained. Areas that the community feel could be strengthened include how feedback is considered as well as the level of knowledge and understanding around student behaviour education/management. More also needs to be done to inform community members about the importance of the use of ICT in the teaching and learning process.

Staff have spent time analysing the survey data and developing initiatives that will help strengthen the programs that we offer. The data has also been discussed with the School Board and presented to the P&C for their information. We thank all members of our community for taking the time to provide us with feedback.

Goodbyes

Staff members who will not be returning to Madeley next year include Mrs Campione, Miss Hawes, Mrs O’Kane and Miss Pullella. We thank them for the excellent work that they have done at our school and wish them all the best for the future. We also wish Mr Moon the best for his teacher exchange in 2017. He will be living and working in Canada for the year and will be replaced by Shannon Kekula who is a Canadian teacher.

Nature Play

We are excited about the process which has commenced to plan and build a nature playground in our school. This process will take some time and will be completed in stages. We hope to see construction commence early in 2017.

Parent Thankyou Morning Tea

Parents and community members who have been active in supporting our school are invited to a special morning tea on 8th December at 10.30am in the Staff Room. Please come along so that we can recognise your efforts.

Final Newsletter

This will be the final full newsletter for the year. A shorter newsletter with basic information about the holidays and commencement dates for next year will be sent home on Friday 16th December. For those taking early holidays I wish you a happy and safe time.

Have a great weekend everyone

Stephen Bevan
Principal

It is up to the discretion of parents as to how formal they go.

Melaleuca Block MLA1, 2, 3 & 4 MUDDY MESS INCURSION

Last Tuesday the Melaleuca Block enjoyed a ‘Muddy Mess’ incursion as part of our Science and nature play program. The Year 1 and Year 2 children got to participate in a range of muddy fun-filled activities, enabling them to connect with nature in a direct way and learn about the natural world around them.

Although we expected some children (and teachers) to be reluctant to explore the unfamiliar characteristics of wet mud, we were pleasantly surprised when almost all students participated straight away! The children were completely covered in mud within a few minutes, and they really enjoyed painting and covering their teachers with mud. When else would you ever be allowed to throw mud at your teacher!? We then enjoyed a sausage sizzle and icy-pole lunch. Thank you to Trish Johnson, Siobhan Jones and Adam Lloyd for helping with the lunch.

We asked some children what their favourite part of the Muddy Mess Day was:

  • Jasmine from MLA 1: I liked sitting in the big tub of mud!
  • Steele from MLA 2: My favourite thing was painting the teachers!
  • Michael from MLA 3: When I threw the bag of mud at you (teacher)!
  • Elena from MLA 4: I liked painting my teachers!

Melville PS won the state final and will represent WA at the MCG next month. Great effort on making the state final Madeley!

Canadian Exchange

As most of you already know, my family and I are off to Canada in 2017. We leave on December 7th and will be back for the start of the 2018 school year. I will be doing a teacher exchange to Ecole’ Alvin Buckwold School in Saskatoon. This means a Canadian teacher (Shannon Kekula) will fill my position for the year here at Madeley. I hope the Madeley community makes her feel welcome and her experience here is a positive one. Thank you to everyone for making 2016 another great year. See you in 2018!

Library

As we are heading to the end of term, I’d like to advise you of the following:

Next week (Week 7) will be the last week for all students to borrow books.

All books are to be returned, if books are lost or damaged, they will need to be paid for.

Until books are returned or a replacement paid for, your child will not be able to borrow another book. If you have any queries, please come and see me in the library Mon – Thurs.

Please take care of books that are on loan to your child.

  • Use a library bag to protect books – bags are available from the uniform shop, or can be purchased at most retailers for a few dollars.
  • Please do not leave in hot cars or in sun.
  • Use clean hands while reading books.
  • Turn pages carefully – no slide and swipe.

School Services

Healthier Eating at School

It is always a challenge packing healthy food that children will eat at school. It can be very frustrating having food left uneaten or wasted by children who are fussy eaters. There are many different online resources to help parents in this area. Here is something from the Better Health site

https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/healthyliving/healthy-eating-school-lunches

What to put in healthier school lunches: Try planning a healthy lunch box. Talk to your children and discuss what they would be happy to have included.

The six key parts to a healthy lunchbox include:

  • fresh fruit
  • fresh crunchy vegetables
  • milk, yoghurt or cheese (you can use reduced-fat options for children over the age of two years). For children who cannot tolerate milk products, offer appropriate alternatives like calcium fortified soy or rice drink or soy yoghurt
  • a meat or meat alternative food like some lean meat (e.g. chicken strips), hard-boiled egg
  • a grain or cereal food like bread, a roll, flat bread, fruit bread or crackers (wholegrain or wholemeal choices are best)
  • tap water.

The Healthy Kids Association also has some helpful advice

http://healthy-kids.com.au/parents/packing-a-healthy-lunchbox/

School Canteen

The School Canteen will NOT be open during the last week of school 14th December and 15th December

Canteen last day will be Friday 9th December

http://www.ouronlinecanteen.com.au/

  • Go to sign up box and click on “Register”.
  • Fill out the section regarding email address and password.
  • You will receive an email to your nominated email address with your confirmation order.
  • A recess/lunch order bag prints out in the canteen on the morning of the order and the order is prepared.

Note – The days the canteen is not open will be marked on the calendar and you will not be able to place an order.

Benefits of this system are:

  • You can order up to 2 weeks ahead.
  • The system will save any regular/favourite order to make ordering online even quicker.
  • It helps the canteen run more efficiently and also saves you time.

Uniform Shop

As 2016 draws to a close, now is the time to get your uniform orders in for next year.

Due to the various events the school will be holding, the uniform shop will not open during the last week of school.

This means the cut off for uniform purchases this year is Friday 9th December so get in quick before it's too late!

School Nurse

Head Lice

It has been brought to our attention that some students in the school have contracted head lice. It is imperative that you check your child’s head and if necessary, treat any lice and eggs.

Health Screen

It is recommended that any Kindergarten children that have not turned 4 yet, should have their health screen done as it may possibly affect their family benefits through Centrelink.
