School Vision
Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected. |
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members
School Open Night
Many thanks go to everyone who supported the Open Night last week. The feedback we received was almost 100% positive with parents gaining a lot of useful information about the work that their children have been doing this year. The graphs below show that we had ¾ of our community attend the event with most classes getting above 50% attendance.
Letter from Nazma
Our Student Council sponsor Nazma through ‘Save the Children’. Nazma lives in Bangladesh. Recently the Student Council sent Nazma a card. Below is her response along with a translation.
“My regards to you. Hope you are doing fine. I am doing fine. I received your greetings card. Thank you very much for writing to me. I liked your photo very much! I read in 7th grade. My school is in summer vacation. That’s all for now. Nazma”
Operation Christmas Child
Our school seeks to provide practical ways in which students and their families can demonstrate the Golden Rule "Treat others as you would like them to treat you" which underpins our Behaviour Education program. This year we are supporting Samaritan's Purse - Operation Christmas Child. This activity involves the packing of a shoe box with suitable items for an underprivileged child somewhere in the world. For more information please check out the Operation Christmas Child website.
https://www.samaritanspurse.org.au/what-we-do/operation-christmas-child/
This site explains how to pack a box. We encourage families to engage in this activity together. All boxes need to be returned to the school by October 14th so that they can be prepared for shipping. The cost of shipping each box is $9.00 which we ask parents to provide with the box if they can. We will be holding a Crazy Hat/Crazy Hair Day on 14th October to raise funds to help those who cannot afford the additional $9.00.
Here is a beautiful video which demonstrates the positive impact that a simple box full of gifts can have in the life of a child.
Convicts for a Cause
We are excited to announce that Sophie Anti has been selected as one of the Junior Ambassadors for Diabetes Research WA. Sophie and her family are part of the 'Convicts for a Cause' fundraising event for 2016. Please consider supporting Sophie and her family by donating to set them 'free'.

Planning for 2017
Now is the time when we begin planning classes for next year. With that in mind I would appreciate being advised, as soon as possible, if your child will be leaving Madeley Primary in 2017. Student enrolments determine what our staffing allocation will be so we need as accurate a number as possible. In early Term 4 we will begin arranging classes for 2017. Relevant information about how classes are formed includes:
- Classes are structured based on enrolments and recommended class sizes. Classes are then constructed to maintain a gender balance and an even distribution of student needs/abilities in each class.
- We also aim to maintain at least one friendship for each child where possible but this is not guaranteed.
- Composite classes are an inevitability over which we have no control but students are not disadvantaged by such arrangements. The same class selection approach is taken in these classes as all others. We do try and avoid repeated years in composite classes if possible.
The process we use:
- A draft class structure is created based on student enrolments (predicted)
- Staff meet to discuss and allocate students to draft classes, consideration is given to:
a. Student academic needs
b. Student behavioral needs
c. Student social needs
d. Gender balance
e. Previous placement in composite class
f. Parent comments/requests - Admin review draft classes and meet with staff to clarify, modify, confirm classes
- Staff meet to discuss final placements (this may involve multiple meetings)
- Classes are displayed for parents and students outside the Library (this will not happen until the beginning of Term 1)
If there are any matters you would like us to consider that are based on educational grounds we ask that you submit them to me in writing (Stephen.bevan@education.wa.edu.au) before the end of Week 2, Term 4 – Friday, 21st October. Please note that requests for particular teachers will not be considered under any circumstances. Requests received after draft classes are formed may not be considered.
I would like to assure all families that we go to great lengths to structure classes to meet the needs of all students.
Happy Holidays
It has been a very busy but productive term and everyone deserves a well-earned rest. I wish all our staff, students and families a happy and safe holiday. School resumes on Monday October 10th.

Class News
Pre Primary goes to SciTech
On the 13th of September Pre-Primary students left the safety of their classrooms and entered the ancient world of the dinosaurs at SciTech. During this time, the children explored the history and movement of dinosaurs through a puppet shadow performance. They were also able to touch dinosaur poop, dig for fossils and discover the benefits of camouflaging. Some of the children’s favourite stations were the construction site, the dinosaur gut feely box (a favourite among the boys), the manoeuvrable metal robot dinosaur and the ball-run. The teaching staff would like to extend a big thank you to all parents who volunteered their time and energy to make this outing a great success.

Sport News
Interschool Athletics Carnival
In week 9 nearly 100 Madeley students competed over 2 days against Ashdale and Landsdale Primary Schools. I was proud of the way our team pursued their personal best and displayed excellent sportsmanship. True character is on display not when we win but when we fail to do as we had hoped. We had some excellent performances over the 2 days. As with any sporting event we also had our share of disappointments but I was proud of the way the majority of our team handled the situation. I was also pleased we improved on last year and closed the gap. The results were:
Equal 1st - Ashdale & Landsdale on 441 points
3rd - Madeley on 416 points
Thank you to all the staff who helped on the day and to the parents who turned up to cheer on the team. Well done Madeley.

MUSIC
Performance Week
This week we have been giving students an opportunity to perform to their class during Music Lesson time. It is a good way to give students experience in performing to an audience in a low-key, safe and encouraging environment.
We’ve enjoyed a vast array of performances ranging from song & dance and instrumentals to comedy acts and even Pokemon impressions! Thanks to the students who have come prepared and well-practiced, and also to our encouraging audiences.
This is the first group of students who performed for us from GLA 3 Year 2/3.
Performing Arts Assembly – Term 4
The Performing Arts Assembly will be held on FRIDAY 21st October. This will feature the Choir and our Instrumental students playing clarinet and flute. The choir’s items will include their Schools Make Music item which they are very keen for the rest of the school to see! We hope to see lots of parents and guests in the undercover area that morning at 8.50 a.m.
Have a safe and happy holiday!

School Services
School Nurse
Head Lice
It has been brought to our attention that some students in the school have contracted head lice. It is imperative that you check your child’s head and if necessary, treat any lice and eggs.
Health Screen
It is recommended that any Kindergarten children that have not turned 4 yet, should have their health screen done as it may possibly affect their family benefits through Centrelink.

School Banking
We need your help for SCHOOL BANKING to continue!
A big thanks to Kim Johnston who has been the volunteer parent for School Banking at our school. With Kim’s daughter ending her time with Madeley Primary at the end of this year, Kim is looking for a new School Banking Coordinator for 2017.
The program requires a volunteer School Banking Co-ordinator to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. This only takes approximately an hour of your time one morning each week and the Commonwealth Bank will provide support in how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising.
Currently, School Banking day is Tuesday, but this can be changed to another day to suit.
Please contact Kim on 0405 112 018 or Jenni Lee (Commonwealth Bank School Banking Specialist) by phoning 0457 514 257 if you would like to help. Alternatively, contact the school office on 9302 3611.
