School Vision

Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected.

From the Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

Operation Christmas Child

Our school believes in making a positive influence in the world. We believe that children need to learn to respect others in practical ways. Respect for the underprivileged and hurting can be learnt through participation in various activities. Operation Christmas Child is one such activity. Operation Christmas Child involves gathering various items and packing them into a shoebox which is then sent as a Christmas gift to a needy child somewhere in the world. This is a wonderful activity to do as a family. All boxes need to be returned to the school by October 14th.

For more information about what to pack in your box please check out the links below:

Open Night

Wednesday's Open Night was a resounding success with parents and family members enjoying the opportunity to visit the school and see what their children have been learning this year. We thank our students and staff for all their hard work in preparing for the night and our parents and school community for their attendance.

Athletics Carnival

Our school carnival was held last week. It was a beautiful day with lots of friendly rivalry and fun being had by all. Many thanks go to Mr Moon and our staff for preparing the event and to our community for supporting it. Well done to Thunder and Storm for winning this year's shields. Students have been selected for our Interschool team based on their results at the carnival. The Interschool competition will be held on Tuesday 13th September (Jumps & Throws) and Thursday 15th September (Sprints and Team events).

Dyslexia

Over the past few newsletters I have been sharing information about some of the disabilities, disorders and medical conditions that can influence student behaviour and learning. It is essential that we are aware of these things so that we can become more understanding and sensitive to the needs of others. It becomes easier to model the golden rule "Treat others as you would like them to treat you" when you have an appreciation of things that can affect behaviour. Classroom teachers have an incredibly complex job catering for all the emotional, physical, behavioural and academic needs of a class full of children.

Dyslexia is not a disease. The word 'dyslexia' comes from the Greek language and means 'difficulty with words.' Students with dyslexia will have trouble learning the letter sounds for reading and spelling. They may lack fluency or read slowly with lots of mistakes. They may also struggle with spelling. Children with dyslexia may become easily distracted; experience reduced academic achievement which can result in off-task behaviour and inconsistency in completing work. Approximately 10% of the population are estimated to be affected by Dyslexia. For more information just Google Dyslexia or check out the links below:

Photos of Children

I have had a concern raised with me regarding parents/family members photographing children who are not their own. At our recent Book Week dress-up some parents were observed photographing other students in their costumes. This is a timely reminder that parents are not permitted to photograph other people's children especially if they intend to post images on social media. The school spends a lot of time gathering permission from parents and then vetting, cropping or editing photos so that only those with consent are used. We ask parents and family members to use the same level of care when dealing with the images of others.

School Board and P&C Meeting

Our next School Board meeting is Wednesday 14th September commencing at 5:30pm in the Staffroom. Parents are welcome to attend the meeting as observers. Following this our P&C meeting will be held commencing at 7:30pm. We would love to see lots of parents at this important community meeting.

Have a great weekend everyone

Father's Day Breakfast

Last week saw the Kindy students welcome their fathers into the classroom's for a Father's Day Breakfast. We all had a great time playing and building with our dads and cooking them breakfast at school. We hope they enjoyed the morning and the little gifts we made for them.

Farmyard on Wheels

The Kindy classes have been learning about Farms this Term, and on Thursday 25th August we had The Farmyard on Wheels come to visit the Kindy classes. Farmer Mick bought along Henry the rooster and his girlfriend Henrietta, who laid an egg. He also had a duck, a goose, rabbits and piglets. We got to feed the baby lambs and kids and to hold the little chicks. Farmer Mick also had an alpaca, a pony and a sheep for us to pat. It was a great opportunity to learn about farm animals and life on the farm. It was a great experience for all involved.

DLA5

SEMAS Academy Australia held their 3rd Annual National Abacus Maths and Mental Arithmetic Championship on Saturday, 25th June 2016 in Perth.

Ria has been invited to represent Australia at the International Abacus Math and Mental Arithmetic Championship in Singapore in October this year. This is a massive achievement and will be competing against 14 other countries.

Faction Carnival

Congratulations to all the students who competed in the Faction Carnival last week. Competition is all about setting goals, trying to achieve your personal best, learning to accept winning and losing and having fun.

On days like this there will always be feelings of disappointment when things don't go our way and it is important for all of us to help our children deal with disappointment in an appropriate way. Thank you to those of you who are striving to teach our students how to win with respect, how to lose with dignity and how to be resilient when mistakes are made.

Thank you to the hard working Madeley staff who did a great job preparing the students for the carnival and thank you to the parents, friends and relatives who either helped out or attended the carnival. The results were:

Spirit Shield (biggest team game improvement from the previous year)

Winner – THUNDER

Overall Shield

1st Storm - 636 pts
2nd Lightning - 632 pts
3rd Thunder - 585 pts

Book Week

Another wonderful Book Week and Book Fair were held this year.

Our Book Fair sales totalled $9,290.00 and from that, we received $3,000.00 commission. We chose $1,000 worth of books and the balance will be used over the next 12 months to order from Book Club or Scholastic Essential catalogue.

A big Thankyou to the volunteers who helped us on sales and setting up during this week – Anne Stickells, Cindy Taylor, Robyn Walton, Karin Villemin, Caroline Truda and our Principal, Mr Bevan.

Also, a huge Thankyou to Nick from BLA1 for all his assistance with setting up prior to the fair.

It was great to see so many students and staff dress up as their favourite book characters for the Book Week Parade. Snow White, Belle, Mary Poppins, Harry Potter, Clifford and many other book characters came to visit during Book Week.

Thanks to all staff and students for participating in a very successful Book Week.

Note – there are still some items from Book Fair on backorder – they should be arriving soon and will be sent to student's classrooms.

Thankyou

MUSIC

'Schools Make Music' WAGSMS Concert Review

Huge congratulations to our Choir who performed at the Crown Theatre 2 weeks ago and to their parents who made sure they arrived in costume and on time. The choir sang, moved and played instruments to a medley of African songs we called 'Out of Africa'. They looked and sounded great and were a credit to our school! Thank you to everyone for your support and encouragement.

Performing Arts Assembly – Term 4

The Performing Arts Assembly will be held on FRIDAY 21st October. This will feature the Choir and our Instrumental students playing clarinet and flute. The choir's items will include their Schools Make Music item which they are very keen for the rest of the school to see! We hope to see lots of parents and guests in the undercover area that morning at 8.50 a.m.

Performance Week

You may have heard your child talking about Performance Week recently! In Week 10 we are giving students an opportunity to perform to their class only during Music Lesson time. It is a good way to give students experience in performing to an audience in a low-key, safe and encouraging environment.

Students who wish to perform have given their names during class, and may sing, dance, play an instrument or perform another entertaining act that they are skilled at (e.g. magic tricks, comedy skit). They are expected to be practising between now and their lesson in Week 10. Some students are performing in small groups. They may bring small accessories or costumes that can be worn with their uniform, but won't be able to change into a full costume. Students bringing items or instruments need their parents' permission and are responsible for their own property.

This will be a fun week and I'm sure your child will share some of the highlights with you!

Open Night

Thanks for those who visited and had a go playing Djembes in the Drum Circle during Open Night. It was noisy and fun and I enjoyed meeting so many of you!

Head Lice

It has been brought to our attention that some students in the school have contracted head lice. It is imperative that you check your child's head and if necessary, treat any lice and eggs.

Health Screen

It is recommended that any Kindergarten children that have not turned 4 yet, should have their health screen done as it may possibly affect their family benefits through Centrelink.

School Banking

We need your help for SCHOOL BANKING to continue!

A big thanks to Kim Johnston who has been the volunteer parent for School Banking at our school. With Kim's daughter ending her time with Madeley Primary at the end of this year, Kim is looking for a new School Banking Coordinator for 2017.

The program requires a volunteer School Banking Co-ordinator to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. This only takes approximately an hour of your time one morning each week and the Commonwealth Bank will provide support in how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising.

Currently, School Banking day is Tuesday, but this can be changed to another day to suit.

Please contact Kim on 0405 112 018 or Jenni Lee (Commonwealth Bank School Banking Specialist) by phoning 0457 514 257 if you would like to help. Alternatively, contact the school office on 9302 3611.
