From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

NAPLAN
On Friday 26th August, students in Year 3 and 5 who participated in the NAPLAN testing will receive their report. Parents are welcome to make an appointment with their child’s teacher if they wish to discuss this report.
Kids with ADHD
At Madeley Primary School we promote key virtues including friendliness, courage, persistence/resilience, tolerance/acceptance and compassion. These virtues are sometimes difficult to model especially when someone behaves impulsively or without thought for others. ADHD is a behavioural disorder which many students live with. This disorder makes them inattentive, impulsive and overactive. Fortunately, there are many ways that ADHD can be managed to assist students to be successful at home and school. The list below provides some simple strategies that can help:
- developing consistent routines
- keeping rules clear and simple with calm reminders
- giving one or two instructions at a time
- close supervision
- ignoring minor irritating behaviours
Many students have family members or friends with ADHD. We recommend that you spend time talking with your child about ways to support those who have ADHD. There are plenty of websites with useful advice available on the web.
Staying Well
We have seen a rise in the number of unwell students at our school. There have been reported cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth disease, Chicken Pox and Influenza at the school in the past few weeks. It is essential that parents keep students who are feeling unwell at home. We ask that you remind your child about simple ways to protect themselves including:
- keeping their hands out of their mouth
- washing hands after using the toilet or before eating
- coughing or sneezing into a tissue or sleeve
The Impact of Nutrition on Student Learning Potential
There are a number of studies that clearly show that nutrition can directly affect mental capacity of children. Deficiency in iron, specific vitamins, minerals, amino acid and carbohydrates result in reduced cognition, mental concentration, perception, intuition and reasoning. Studies clearly show that improved nutrition can positively influence the cognitive ability and intelligence levels of students.
Students who eat well are likely to engage better, attend more regularly and behave more positively during school times. It is essential that parents provide their child with a nutritious breakfast and pack their lunchboxes with healthy food choices. The school promotes healthy eating through Health lessons as well as the Crunch-and-Sip program. Together we can help our students be prepared for learning success in the classroom.
Open Night
We have changed the time of the Open Night to 4.30 – 6.30pm on 7th September. Please come along and see what your children have been learning on this night. There will be a Coffee Van available on the night.
WAGSMS Concert
Last night our school choir performed at Crown Theatre as part of the Western Australian Government Schools Music Society concerts. They did a wonderful job and we thank them for their efforts. Special thanks also go to Mrs Campione and all the staff and parents who supported her to get our choir prepared for this wonderful event.
Have a great weekend everyone

GLA3 & GLA4
Our Assembly Item
By Lucy McSweeney from GLA4
One rainy and damp morning, I woke up early because it was our assembly item about the Golden Rule. I said to my mum, “Hurry up we’re going to be late, it’s 7.38am.” So we got in the car and my mum was taking so long getting out the driveway that I told her to hurry.
We arrived at school at 8am and got into our costumes. My class walked down to the undercover area very quietly, but when all the classes started to arrive I got butterflies in my tummy. I was nervous, but after a while I started to feel more confident.
Our assembly item was beginning and I was so mad at the box that I was wearing. It was scratching me all over, but it was funny when the box went over my head.
I loved the finale dance. I loved that part where we had to clap and do the rolling action with our arms. I was nervous when I had to speak in front of the whole school and parents that I started to shake. I felt like I was going to faint. I was so excited and happy to do our assembly item.
Our Assembly Item
By Alexandre Rodrigues Gomes from GLA4
One Thursday morning I had woken up really excited. In fact, I had never been so excited and nervous to go to school in my life because it was the year 2/3 GLA3 and GLA4 assembly day!
I was so excited that I nearly banged my head on the side of the bed while I was getting dressed for school. After that I rushed downstairs getting more and more nervous by the second. I ate my breakfast really fast and went to school.
When I got to school, I jumped out of the car, grabbed my bag and ran to my classroom. Once I got to my classroom, I put my costume on and we set off to the undercover area. Our assembly item was about the book ‘The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig’.
When we did the final dance, my hat fell off and at one part I started to free dance too early. At last I said, “That assembly I did was the best assembly ever.”

Science
SCIENCE WEEK 2016
The celebrations of Science went well. On Tuesday the weather was very kind to us and we had the Rocket Incursion. From observation and all reports I have had, the children thoroughly enjoyed launching and collecting rockets and in some cases learning a little about what powered them. Since the incursion, most children have seen the video taken by the rocket and recognised their house or identified which parts of the school and school grounds they could see from above.
During the week the children were involved in STEM based activities in the Science room. They worked through the activities with their teams and they learnt or developed some new skills and knowledge whether it was science based or just how to work within a group!
The daily puzzles were well subscribed and our daily winners are now playing science games at home with their families.
Those children that chose to enter the Robot design competition did a fantastic job. The judging came right down to the line and was finally decided by looking at how thoroughly the entrants followed the competition guidelines. Well done to all those who entered. You all made the judging extremely difficult!
The winners were:
K/PP Ryan Hou LLA3
Yr 1/2 Emily Nelligan GLA3
Yr 3/4 Lauren Schneider DLA2
Yr 5/6 Monique Cornall DLA4
If you would like to see these and all the other entries they will be on display in the Science room on Open Night.
You are also invited to come with your children and try out some of the activities the children were challenged by during Science Week.

Head Lice
It has been brought to our attention that some students in the school have contracted head lice. It is imperative that you check your child’s head and if necessary, treat any lice and eggs.
Health Screen
It is recommended that any Kindergarten children that have not turned 4 yet, should have their health screen done as it may possibly affect their family benefits through Centrelink.

School Banking
We need your help for SCHOOL BANKING to continue!
A big thanks to Kim Johnston who has been the volunteer parent for School Banking at our school. With Kim’s daughter ending her time with Madeley Primary at the end of this year, Kim is looking for a new School Banking Coordinator for 2017 .
The program requires a volunteer School Banking Co-ordinator to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. This only takes approximately an hour of your time one morning each week and the Commonwealth Bank will provide support in how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising.
Currently, School Banking day is Tuesday, but this can be changed to another day to suit.
Please contact Kim on 0405 112 018 or Jenni Lee (Commonwealth Bank School Banking Specialist) by phoning 0457 514 257 if you would like to help. Alternatively, contact the school office on 9302 3611.
