School Vision
Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected. |
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members
Second Semester has started well with most students settling quickly back into routine. I encourage you to pull out your child’s report from last semester and read through it with them. Try to identify things that they are strong in and encourage them to keep doing well in these areas. Also identify one or two things that they can improve in. This may be to do with an academic area or behavioural area. Write these things down and regularly ask them how they are going in these areas. Remember to encourage them in their struggles but always remind them that the best learning comes when we overcome our difficulties.
Play is the Way (PITW)
The author of PITW (Wilson McCaskill) presented a full day of training to our staff last Monday 18th July. The PITW program is being used by many schools across Australia as the basis for teaching social-emotional understanding and skills to students. These skills are essential and are part of the Personal and Social Capability within the Australian Curriculum:
“In the Australian Curriculum, students develop personal and social capability as they learn to understand themselves and others, and manage their relationships, lives, work and learning more effectively. Personal and social capability involves students in a range of practices including recognising and regulating emotions, developing empathy for others and understanding relationships, establishing and building positive relationships, making responsible decisions, working effectively in teams, handling challenging situations constructively and developing leadership skills.”
Developing the ability to recognise and regulate emotions, be empathic, build positive relationships, make strong decisions, work effectively in teams and handle challenging situations with perseverance and success doesn’t happen by chance but requires explicit teaching. The school environment provides the perfect opportunity for these capabilities to be developed in meaningful ways as students work and interact with each other. The PITW program has provided us with the framework around which we can provide explicit teaching to our students and thus build these capabilities.
Social-emotional learning, like most other areas requires time. Just as we would not expect a student to suddenly improve in mathematics through one lesson we cannot expect that children will suddenly become ‘better behaved’ or ‘more caring’ through one lesson. Children learn best in an environment that is caring, where they are challenged and where they are held accountable for their learning. Punishing them or rewarding them for learning has been found to be ineffective in bringing about sustained, ongoing and meaningful improvement. In fact, research is beginning to show that rewards and punishments can result in reduced effort and less improvement.
One area that Wilson mentioned which resonated with me was the importance of developing perseverance and resilience in children. Perseverance is the ability to ‘hang in there’ when things are tough or when we are experiencing discomfort. Resilience is the ability to ‘bounce back’ when we are hurt. Perseverance and resilience take a long time to develop. Our tendency as adults is to protect children from failure or discomfort. By doing this we actually weaken them as we remove the opportunity for them to learn to deal with emotions and feelings that will make them want to give up and avoid facing their problems. As adults we need to guide and support children to manage their own problems because they have the ability to be successful with our help.
Another tendency we have is to look for a ‘quick fix’ to our children’s problems i.e. ‘if this happens it will all be better’. Rewards and punishments are a reflection of this ‘quick-fix’ mentality. The idea that giving a child a sticker will result in improved behaviour or that detaining or suspending a child will make them behave better is false. Research shows that this carrot and stick approach does not result in sustained, ongoing changes in behaviour. When it comes to social-emotional learning there is no ‘quick-fix’. As adults we need to model (or learn) empathy, perseverance and resilience as we support our children to develop these very things themselves.

The Golden Rule
The Year 2 LLA 4 and LLA 5 ended Term 2 with a GOLDEN MESSAGE.
By re-enacting ‘The Berenstain’ Bears by Stan and Jan Berenstain within a school and home setting the students passed on the important message we value here at Madeley Primary.
TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WOULD
LIKE THEM TO TREAT YOU
The play showed just how a new girl at Liferaft Primary School felt when left out by the others. The story had links with some of the characters they had studied by Dr Seuss. Well done to all the students who did an amazing job.

A new Drum Circle group will begin in Week 3, Monday 1st August and applications were available this week.
Drum Circles have been increasing in popularity in recent times due to their many and varied benefits; musically, socially, emotionally and physically! Plus they are great fun. These are interest groups only and students need to apply and be selected to participate.
- Students from Years 3 – 6 are welcome to apply by asking me for a form. An application does not mean automatic inclusion.
- Members of previous Drum Circles may re-apply but preference will be given to new students.
- Each group of 10 – 12 students will meet for 3 consecutive Monday lunchtimes in the Music Room.

Chaplain’s Chat
Hi there and welcome back to Semester 2!
I hope you had a lovely holiday break and that the term has begun well for you and your families. I am so grateful for the school holidays and the change of pace that enables you to rest up a bit and feel refreshed.
I wanted to take a moment to remind you about the chaplaincy service here at Madeley Primary School. I am at the school on Thursdays from 11:00am and my role as Chaplain involves supporting the school community through pastoral care. A key service I will be involved in is one-to-one conversations for students struggling with social or emotional issues (e.g. family separations, grief and loss, anxiety, conflict resolution, bullying and so on) and I’m looking forward to spending time with the Buddy Club in the library again. Also, I am available to liaise between families and support services in the community where need be.
Parents and carers, please feel most welcome to make contact with me through the school administration with any queries or concerns.

School Banking
We need your help for SCHOOL BANKING to continue!
A big thanks to Kim Johnston who has been the volunteer parent for School Banking at our school. With Kim’s daughter ending her time with Madeley Primary at the end of this year, Kim is looking for a new School Banking Coordinator for 2017 .
The program requires a volunteer School Banking Co-ordinator to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. This only takes approximately an hour of your time one morning each week and the Commonwealth Bank will provide support in how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising.
Currently, School Banking day is Tuesday, but this can be changed to another day to suit.
Please contact Kim on 0405 112 018 or Jenni Lee (Commonwealth Bank School Banking Specialist) by phoning 0457 514 257 if you would like to help. Alternatively, contact the school office on 9302 3611.
