From the Principal

Dear Parents/Carers

End of Semester and Holidays

We are half way through another school year. I wish all our students and staff a safe and restful holiday. Students start back on Tuesday 19th July after a School Development Day (student free) on Monday 18th July.

Q&A Meeting

Yesterday we held another Q&A session for parents. At the meeting we talked about the ongoing problem we are having with the kiss-and-drive during pick up time after school. We also talked about our Positive Behaviour Education policy. In particular, we discussed the questions:

  • What happens when a child is sent to the office for behaviour issues?
  • How does suspension work and when is it used?

Our next Q&A session will be after assembly on 18th August.

Staffing Semester 2

Next term we have the following staff changes:

  • Ms James will be on Long Service Leave and will return as a member of our teaching staff.
  • Mrs Beccegato will be returning as Deputy Principal
  • Miss Reid will be leaving and will be replaced by Mrs Saddington
  • Mrs Swift will be taking some leave and will be replaced by Mrs Clayden
  • Mrs Drinkell will be leaving and will be replaced by Ms Rossetti

We wish all our staff that are leaving the very best and welcome those who will be joining our team at Madeley.

Mr Moon on Exchange

In 2017 Mr Moon has been accepted to participate in the Teacher Exchange program. This will mean that he will spend the year teaching and living in Canada with his family. The teacher he is exchanging with is Shannon Kekula who is an experienced PE teacher. This is an exciting time for Mr Moon. It will also be a great learning experience for our students who will be able to work with a Canadian teacher for the whole year.

Pre-Service Teachers

This term we have had a group of highly dedicated pre-service teachers completing their final teaching practice at our school. We congratulate them on their excellent work and wish them the best for their future career.

Fun Run

Many thanks go to our students and parents for supporting the Fun Run which was held on Wednesday. Thanks also go to Mr Moon for organising the event. The weather was great and everyone had a wonderful time. We raised $4641.00 – Great Work Madeley!

Kiss-and-drive

Parents are reminded that they need to show patience and consideration of others when using the kiss-and-drive during school pick-up times. It is essential that parents do not block the kiss-and-drive by parking or remaining in the bays when their child has not arrived. Parents should exit the bays and use the round-abouts to re-join the line. Other suggestions to reduce congestions include:

  1. Walk instead of driving
  2. Park in a side street and walk
  3. Come a few minutes later
  4. Encourage your children to get into the car quickly so that you can exit quickly
  5. Leave the kiss-and-drive promptly (don’t engage in conversations with bystanders).

Together we can make a difference to this ongoing problem.

Have a great holiday everyone

Principal

Litterbug Doug and Michael Recycle Assembly with MLA1 and MLA2

MLA 1 & 2 have been busy this term preparing their Assembly. The message of our performance was to encourage Madeley students to take care of their school environment and put their rubbish in the bin. Litterbug Doug displayed weak choices by not caring about throwing his rubbish on the floor. Michael Recycle, his green men and the litterbug police came in to save the day and taught Litterbug Doug why it is important to always put your rubbish in the bin. The students had a wonderful time learning and performing their Assembly.

MLA1 & 2 Scitech Excursion

MLA 1 & 2 went on an excursion to Scitech on Thursday the 23rd of June. We watched a Maths and Explosions Show which taught us about how Maths is all around us. Next, we saw the Planetarium show and learnt about why Earth has four seasons. Then, we discovered hidden fossils and robot dinosaurs in the Explore-A-Saurus exhibit. It was an excellent excursion!

Reminder From the School Nurse

It is recommended that any Kindergarten children that have not turned 4 yet should have their health screen done as it may possibly affect their family benefits through Centrelink.

Madeley make the Front Page!

Madeley Primary School featured on the front page of the recent Wanneroo Times with a photograph and an article regarding the background of why Pirate Day was started.

See below the Wanneroo Times article.

“JACK Sparrow does not have a patch on these pirates.

Madeley Primary School students were among more than 65,000 children Australia-wide who donned eye patches as pirates to raise funds for research into childhood brain cancer on Friday.

Madeley staff personalised their proceedings by organising a “brain freeze for brain cancer”, with a local ice cream manufacturer selling desserts to the students and the proceeds going to the fundraiser.

The national phenomenon known as Pirate Day Friday was inspired by nine-year-old Joondalup resident Conor Colgan.

In 2014, his father Nathan began the fundraiser at Francis Jordan Catholic School, which his son attended in Currambine, after Conor was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour.

The resilient youngster continues to defy the odds in 2016, but treatment has left him with paralysis to half his face and blindness in his right eye. It is because of this that children wear eye patches on Pirate Day Friday.

The concept grew last year to raise more than $40,000 from 49 registered schools in WA.”

As you can see this is a good cause and we were very proud that our students and staff were able to raise $830.10

Cluster Muster

Our school choir and the Year 6’s participated in the annual Cluster Muster last Thursday 23rd June at Ashdale Secondary College, a performing arts event for our local schools. The students enjoyed watching the wonderful array of performances during rehearsal time and then performed to parents and guests. The performances were of a high standard and very entertaining. Congratulations to all the Madeley PS students who participated in either the Year 6 ‘Shrek’ item, the Choir’s ‘Out of Africa/Circle of Life’ performance or the Ashdale Cluster Dance Troupe’s entertaining dance ‘E = Mc2’. A couple of students were in all three! Our kids looked and sounded great and did our school proud.

SIM Concert

Another event in Arts week at Ashdale Secondary College last week was the School of Instrumental Music (SIM) Concert on Tuesday evening, 21st June. Our Year 6 Clarinet students represented our school this time; Sienna Bailey, Owen Ansell, Ella Buckland, Holly Dickson and Daniel Toth. These students have been learning for just a few months, but confidently played to the audience of families and guests in their first public performance. A couple of our clarinettists said this about the evening -

“I enjoyed learning clarinet and performing at the Ashdale SC instrument Concert and would suggest it in someone’s future. It is really fun learning with our teacher Kate too.” – Holly Dickson

“On Wednesday the 21st of June five of our students went to Ashdale Secondary College to perform at their music concert. They did a wonderful time performing Rain, Rain Go Away and Hambone with their teacher and Mrs Campione. They listened to the band and the other students from the cluster schools, with their parents watching proud. It was an amazing performance” – Sienna Bailey

And from the clarinet teacher Ms Kate Newnham –

“Just wanted to congratulate you on what a fabulous job the Madeley PS students did last night at the ASC Mid-Year Music Concert. They not only played to a high standard but also represented MPS and SIM very well, acting professionally both on and off the stage.”

Well done Year 6 Clarinettists! We are looking forward to hearing you play at school next term.

Enjoy the holiday break
