From the Principal
Dear Parents/Carers
What We Believe
Our staff and School Board have been participating in the preparation of the school’s next Business Plan. Part of this process involved the identification of our beliefs around what makes a successful school. The agreed beliefs are listed below:
- Students succeed best when education is viewed as a shared responsibility between home and school.
- That high expectations will promote high standards
- That best practice in teaching should be common practice in all classrooms
- Real-life, purposeful learning is best achieved through well planned, explicit teaching.
- In supporting all community members (staff, students, parents) to achieve their best through reflective practice and collaboration.
- Students learn best when they are fully engaged in the learning process and highly accountable for their own achievement.
- In catering for individual needs through the differentiation of curriculum.
- That respectful, caring relationship will enable everyone to feel safe, valued and supported.
- In clear, open and respectful communication.
- Learning is life-long and is achieved through commitment and resilience.
- The school environment is an ideal social setting in which to teach positive behaviour.
- Improvement in behaviour is learnt best through positive, respectful relationships and not rewards and punishments
- In developing independent learners
We expect that each of these beliefs will be strongly represented in the things that we do over the next few years. We ask that parents and community members look for examples of these beliefs in action and let us know when we are doing well. We also ask that you provide us with feedback when you do not see these beliefs in action so that we can self-reflect and work on improving. Ways you can provide feedback include: talking to classroom teachers, attending meetings with Admin members, sending emails and/or letters, completing the annual community survey, contributing to P&C meetings and School Board meetings. I will be unpacking each of these beliefs using my blog and the school newsletter over the remainder of the year so that you have a better idea of what they should look like in action.
School Uniforms
Imagine what the Fremantle Dockers or West Coast Eagles players would look like if they all ran out for a game wearing different shirts. Uniforms help you to be easily recognised as belonging to a team. More importantly, they help to build your sense of ownership and belonging. At Madeley Primary we have a uniform policy which has been endorsed by the School Board. Students are expected to show that they are part of our team by wearing the correct uniform or at least the correct school colours. We have a number of students who have been wearing jumpers which are completely different. Please support your child to be part of the team by providing them with the correct uniform.
Mathematics Professional Learning
Dr Paul Swan has visited our school again this week and worked with our Lighthouse Teachers on strategies for strengthening the teaching and learning of Mathematics across our school. These teachers will share their learning with other staff and the suggested strategies and routines will be incorporated into classroom lessons. We will also be working on providing parents with short videos that they can watch to support their own child’s learning at home. Videos will be posted on the school website in Semester 2.
Manna
The Ashdale Cluster is supporting Manna which is a not-for-profit organisation that helps the homeless of our city. Our Student Council is planning to join this worthwhile venture by planning a number of activities in Second Semester. Activities will include blanket drives and the creation of food hampers. More information on this program will be provided in subsequent newsletters. Attached to this newsletter is a recent West Weekend article about the work of Manna.
Global Corporate Challenge
The Department of Education is promoting health and wellbeing through the Global Corporate Challenge. Three teams from Madeley have taken up the challenge and are busy competing to achieve the most steps each day. The importance of breaking up our sedentary lifestyle with physical activity is something that we teach to our students and encourage across our community. Parents are encouraged to check out the resources available at
https://www.gettheworldmoving.com/
http://www.healthierworkplacewa.com.au/
School Watch
School Watch encourages the school community to report any suspicious activity in and around school grounds, after hours and on weekends, as well as during school holidays. Telephone 1800 177 777 (freecall) or 13 14 44 (WA Police).
Please remember that it is essential that we know who is on our school site at any time during the day. Parents are reminded that they should come through the school office when visiting outside of regular drop-off and pick-up times.
Have a great weekend everyone

Principal

Shrek!
On Thursday 19th May the Year 6 students from BLA 1 and 2 performed their class assembly item for the school. The students danced, acted and sang to their own version of a revamped ‘Shrek’ meets ‘Modern Day Shrek’! Lots of fun was had as students portrayed various characters under the direction of Mrs Chester and Mr Taddei. All students were excited to perform their item in their character and fairytale costumes.
We were so proud of our excited and talented group of students who gave every ounce of energy they had to perform with so much flair and enthusiasm! Thank you to the parents who went above and beyond to ensure the students looked magnificent!
Mrs Chester and Mr Taddei
Cancer Morning Tea
On Wednesday 25th of May the Staff of Madeley Primary School participated in Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. Staff were treated to a wonderful spread of cakes, pastries and other treats whilst opening up their hearts and pockets to raise money for the Cancer Council.

Thanks to those families who sent in shirts recently. There may be a couple still missing so please have a look and return them, washed, as soon as you can. Thanks.
Drum Circle – applications available now!
Madeley’s first Drum Circle for 2016 concluded on Monday after 3 weeks of Djembe-beating, improvising and creating some cool rhythms together.
Drum Circles have been increasing in popularity in recent times due to their many and varied benefits; musically, socially, emotionally and physically! Plus they are great fun. These are interest groups only, and students will need to apply and be selected to participate.
Students from Years 3 – 6 may apply by asking me for a form on Wednesday 8th June. An application does not mean automatic inclusion. Each group of 10 – 12 students will meet for 3 consecutive Monday lunchtimes starting on 13th June. Students will be informed on Thursday 9th June if they are accepted. Members of our first Drum Circle may re-apply but preference will be given to new students.
Thanks
Mrs Campione
Music Teacher

Tim Winton Short Story Competition
The city of Subiaco is offering a wonderful opportunity for young short story writers: the ‘Tim Winton Short Story Competition’. Young writers can compete in five age-based categories. The submissions can be up to 2000 words (though quality, not quantity is what matters).
If you have a fantastic short story, or if you would like to write a new one, now is the time.
Entry requirements
The award is open to all Western Australian students aged between five and eighteen, and in school years one to twelve. Stories submitted must be original and be the sole work of the entrant. Entries should be fiction, no more than 2000 words and be written in prose. Prose is the ordinary language that people use when they speak or write. It does not include poetry or verse.
Judging
The award judging panel is made up of local authors, educators and librarians. Entries are judged individually in the following categories:
Lower Primary – School Years 1
and 2
Middle Primary – School Years 3 and 4
Upper Primary – School Years 5 and 6
Lower Secondary – School Years 7, 8 and 9
Upper Secondary – School Years 10, 11 and 12
This is a creative writing competition and entries will be judged on the originality of the themes, the development of the story and the quality (not quantity) of the writing. The judges are looking for entries which use words to create imagery.
Closing date: 4th July.
