Newsletter Articles

From the Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

Our Vision and Values

We are currently working on developing our next Business Plan which will shape the future of our school for the next three years. At the heart of our plan are our vision and values statements:

Vision:

Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected.

Values:

  • RESPECT: for self, others, community, environment
  • RESPONSIBILITY: for behaviour of self and others, and for learning
  • RESILIENCE: in relationships, in learning, being able to bounce-back, learn from failures, take risks and self-reflect

Our vision statement identifies key areas that we think are essential for a vibrant and healthy school. 'Life-long learning', 'positive community', 'respect', 'independence' and 'excellence' all feature in our vision. Over the next three years we will striving to promote these things through the programs and strategies we put in place.

Our approach to Positive Education focuses on 'respect', 'responsibility' and 'resilience'. We value these things and believe that they need to be explicitly taught to our students which is why we have adopted the Play is the Way Program as a key part of our approach.

We look forward to partnering with our parents and the wider community as we journey through the next three years together.

Chat with Members of Admin

Starting on June 2nd we will be providing parents who are interested with a chance to chat with members of Admin after the school assembly. These chats will provide parents with a chance to ask questions about any aspects of the school and its work. We encourage you to consider coming along, coffee and tea will also be available.

Attendance

Every school day counts in the learning and development of a child. Most learning is developmental and is built on prior learning and experience. Children who miss out develop gaps in their learning which can be very difficult to fill. Attached to this newsletter is a brochure produced by the Ashdale Cluster which provides you with information about attendance.

Manna

The Ashdale Cluster of schools has decided to support Manna which is a group that seeks to help homeless people in our city. Our Student Councillors attended a meeting at Ashdale Secondary College this week and wrote this report:

"The Student Councillors from Madeley, Ashdale, Landsdale Primary Schools and Ashdale Secondary College met at the college to learn about Manna. People donate old clothes, food, water, socks, shoes and money for homeless people. Things like this make a huge difference to people who are struggling. An example we heard was that a kid was walking to school with his feet in empty tissue boxes because he didn't have shoes. Another time a kid got given some socks from Manna and was so excited that he didn't want to cover the sharks on his socks with his shoes. We found the topic very interesting and hope to raise awareness at our school."

Through supporting Manna we are providing our students with a practical and real-life example of "Treating others as you would want them to treat you." More information will be sent home later in the term. Check out www.manna.org.au

Before School

Duty of care for our students is extremely important and we take it very seriously. Students who arrive early must gather outside the Principal's office until they are released at 8.30am. This rule applies even if their parents are waiting with them. Students are not permitted to hang around other areas of the school or use play equipment. We ask that parents please follow this rule or arrange for their children to arrive after 8.30am.

K/PP Art Show

Last night our Kindy and Pre-Primary held their biannual Art Show. This was an amazing event which was well supported by parents and community members.

We thank Ms Waddell and all our K/PP staff and students for the enormous amount of work they have done to make this event such a success.

Thanks also go to Mr Moon for his work as auctioneer and MC on the night.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability.

All schools in Australia, including Independent and Catholic schools, will participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability every year.

The Data Collection is an annual count of the number of students with disability receiving educational adjustments to support their participation in education on the same basis as students without disability.

All education agencies are now required under the Australian Education Regulation 2013, to provide information on a students' level of education, disability and level of adjustment to the Australian Government Department of Education. Data will continue to be de-identified prior to its transfer and no student's identity will be provided to the Australian Government Department of Education.

The collection of this information from states and territories will inform future policy and program planning in relation to students with disability.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Western Australian Department of Education NCCD Helpline on 0477 741 598.

Madeley's Veggie Garden Looking Beautiful

Watch out for an abundance of produce available from the Madeley Veggie Patch!

Taylah and Cleo had lots of fun selling a variety of salad items to parents after yesterday's Assembly. Pesto using spinach, basil and chives made by the Year 6 students was a huge success too!

The garden is harvested regularly and ready for sale on our classroom Assembly Days.

Have You Taken On The Walking To School Challenge?

Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around. You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by walking with them the whole way to school or park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way. Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic.

This year the Sustainability team have challenged you to find and take a photo of some interesting things in nature you can see when walking to or from school that you wouldn't see if you were in the car. Remember to email your photo collage to jude.james@madeleyprimary.wa.edu.au and the Sustainability Team will post them on our Travel Smart blog ( http://tsts.com.au/ then search "Madeley" under "Schools & Members" tab)

Remember, Active Kids are Smarter Kids. For more information, visit www.walk.com.au

Here is our photo collage from a walk around the school block! What will you see on your walk?

Constable Care Incursion

Turning Spaces Into Places

After being inspired by the Protyping Festival in Claremont http://marketstreetprototyping.org/ who invited "the general public to come out, enjoy the creativity of our talent, rediscover the neighbourhood, and remember what it's like to play in the streets", Miss James took the opportunity to set up some interactive experiences for the younger students while the big kids went to the Swimming Carnival at the end of last term.

Cheap, simple materials were left around the playground with some inspirational photos. It was amazing to see the interaction and creativity from the children. Many children created new games, made new friends and had a fun, productive playtime. The big question is "When can we do it again?"

Year 2 History Excursion

In Week 2 this term the Year 2 students from LLA4 and LLA5 went on an excursion to link in with their history studies and to learn about the local history of Wanneroo.

Students went to Cockman House to discover the local history of the Cockman family, and became history hunters as they explored the grounds of the historic home.

They also travelled to the Wanneroo Museum where they got to look at artefacts from the past, learn about Wanneroo's farming history and explore the museum.

Some highlights for students were dressing up in historic clothes, trying their hand at washing the old fashioned way and seeing what a phone used to look like – pre-iPhone days!

A special thank you to the wonderful parent helpers and staff who made the excursion run smoothly, and to the students who did a fantastic job of representing Madeley.

A to Z Family Literacy and Numeracy Ideas

Here are a few examples from the attached flyer for ideas and activities for building and encouraging your child's literacy and numeracy skills. Download the flyer for the full A to Z.

Ask your child to weigh and measure ingredients for your recipes both in the supermarket and at home.

Family joke journals can be created by interviewing family members and writing down favourite jokes. Perhaps publish them in a word document.

Play games such as Monopoly, Snakes and Ladders, dominoes or cards. Using two dice instead of one when playing board games can help with addition and subtraction.

This week BLA2 got to meet Troy Bennell and his daughter Holly. They came and taught us about their culture. Troy and his daughter helped us make some pretty special art about the Madeley and City of Wanneroo area. The magnificent experience taught us some pretty special skills. The art that we created will be put up in a Naidoc Week art gallery at the City of Wanneroo. The experience gave us an opportunity to get to learn and be a part of something big and brilliant. A small thing can go a long way like it did today.

Ten Privacy Tips for Parents and Carers

Children are increasingly spending more time online to connect with friends, learn and be entertained. Online environments give children the chance to express themselves and build an online personal identity. Sharing personal information online can be risky and it's important to educate your children on how to make good decisions and limit those risks.

  1. Start the privacy conversation
  2. Get involved
  3. Read privacy policies and collection notices
  4. Tailor privacy settings
  5. Develop good password practices
  6. Discuss their digital footprint
  7. Teach your children to think before they share
  8. Encourage safe and smart mobile use
  9. Be aware of online advertising
  10. Emphasise help is always available

Your children need as much support online as they do offline. Click on this fact sheet for information and useful tips that will help you and your children protect their privacy when they interact online.
