From the Principal

Dear Parents and Community

Book Week

I would like to thank all the parents and grandparents for their support of Book Week at Madeley Primary. It was great to see the massive turnout at our annual Book Week Parade. Your interest and enjoyment with literature goes a long way to encouraging children to read. Additional Book Week news and photos are provided in this newsletter.

Nature Play Area

With the introduction of the National Quality Standards where there is an emphasis on natural unstructured play in the outdoors, we have been allowing students to play in the ‘bush’ area that divides the school oval from the park area. Research on nature play has shown the following:

  • Children who play regularly in natural settings are sick less often. Mud, sand, water, leaves, sticks, pine cones and gum nuts can help to stimulate children's immune system as well as their imagination.
  • Children who spend more time outside tend to be more physically active and less likely to be overweight.
  • Children who play in natural settings are more resistant to stress; have lower incidence of behavioural disorders, anxiety and depression; and have a higher measure of self-worth.
  • Children who play in natural settings play in more diverse, imaginative and creative ways and show improved language and collaboration skills. Single use, repetitive play equipment becomes boring quickly.
  • Natural, irregular and challenging spaces help kids learn to recognise, assess and negotiate risk and build confidence and competence.
  • Children who play in nature have more positive feelings about each other.
  • Bullying behaviour is greatly reduced where children have access to diverse nature-based play environments.
  • Symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder are reduced after contact with nature.

You may have heard the students talking about the fun and adventures they are having in our nature play area. It has been great to see that in only a few weeks the children have grown in resilience, creativity and problem solving. We are now expanding our nature play environments into the Early Childhood playground to provide these opportunities for all Madeley students.

Ministerial Visit to Madeley

The Honourable Peter Collier MLC, Minister for Education and The Honourable Liz Behjat Member for the North Metropolitan Region will visit our School on Friday 12th September, 2014. They will visit some of our classrooms to see the amazing integration of technologies taking place. We welcome them to Madeley Primary School

Arrival at School

Parents are reminded students should not arrive at school before 8.30. Students who arrive prior to this time need to be using the Camp Australia facilities situated on site. Bookings can be made online by visiting www.campaustralia.com.au and then entering Madeley Primary School in the school finder.

Parent Parking

Parents are reminded that care needs to be taken around the school. Cars should always give way to pedestrians and if you park on grassed areas it is your responsibility to take care and be vigilant. If you park on a footpath this is against council bylaws and you can be fined.

We hope with better weather parents choose to park appropriately and walk with their children. I note there are many parking bays available further down Lockeport Approach but drivers still want to park at the front gate.

Class Placement Requests

Teachers and administration at Madeley PS work together to place students in classes considering many factors. If you feel that you have any educational concerns or extra information for us to consider when looking at class placements for your child/ren please write this in a letter addressed to the Principal, marked Private and Confidential Class Placements 2015 by Friday 5th September.

An example of an educational nature can include – placement of twins; relatives in the same class; family issues that impact on learning; special needs of the child. Parents may be asked for an interview if further clarification is needed regarding the placement. The administration team will consider teachers and parents opinions before finalising class lists by the end of the year. A request is not a guarantee of class placement.

Students Not Returning 2015

Please notify the office if your child/ren will not be returning to Madeley Primary School in 2015. This information is required in planning the school structure and classes for next year. We appreciate your assistance with this.

Student Councillors Visit to Parliament House

On the 14th and the 21st of August the Student Councilors went to Parliament House for a tour and a magnificent lunch. We travelled by car with Mrs Ovens, Miss James, Miss Stitfold and Mr Moon.

The excursion started with a tour of Parliament House where we learnt about the history of parliament in Western Australia. We were lucky enough to watch what happens in both the Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly. We even got to see what question time was like.

After that we sat down in the dining hall and had a delicious lunch with Liz Behjat MLA for Northern Metropolitan Area.

Some of the things we could order were…Chili Mussels, Chicken Schnitzel, Salmon, Lamb Shank, BBQ Lamb, Soups, Salads, Mud Cake, Pavlova, Raspberry Cheesecake (there was a lot more but they were just a few).

We ended up being in a ‘food coma’ following a three course meal. Overall it was a great day. We learnt a lot about how parliament works its history and had lots of fun at the same time!

Book Week 2014

Thank you for the wonderful support of the Madeley families for this year’s book week. It was really great to see all the children and staff dressed up on Friday. There were some really amazing costumes which I’m sure a lot of work went into making them.

We had great success with Book Fair this year. We sold $9,529 worth of books and from this the school will receive $2,900 towards resources for our school. I would also like to thank the families for their kind donations of books to the library.

The Book Fair could not have been held without the amazing help from the following parents: Cindy Taylor, Susanna Melanko, Tracie Simpson and Raelene Cornall.

Also a big thank you for our school librarian Erna Cabrera for coming in on her day off to help with sales and choosing books for the library, many thanks to Miss Horrocks for giving up the Art Room for our Grandparents Morning Tea.

Thank you

Mrs Miller

Science Week 2014

Madeley Primary School students celebrated National Science Week with a range of activities this year. Students became UV Detectives, worked out how they are scientists in everyday life, learned about famous scientists, made 60 second science clips, visited Ashdale Secondary College’s Science Expo and tested their scientific thinking with daily challenges and take home quizzes. Wow! So much Science!

I hope everyone enjoyed Science Week this year!

Science Coordinator

Take Home Quiz winners:

Lachlan Donoghue (BLA2)
Lilah Stevenson (LLA4)
Jayden Ward (GLA2)
Spandan Kankumbkar (LLA5)

Daily Challenge Winners:

Aiden Vreedenburgh (GLA1)
Brodie Haagman (DLA1)
Hayley Maunder (DLA1)

Bonus Cryptic Challenge Winner:

Alexia Italiano (DLA1)
The answer to the cryptic challenge was WATER.

Students from DLA1 and DLA3, DLA5 and GLA4 visited Ashdale Secondary College to take part in the Science Expo prepared by the science leaders in Years 9 and 10. There were lots of exciting activities and things to see!

On Tuesday 12/8/2014, GLA4 went to Ashdale Secondary College for a Science Expo. When we climbed on the bus many students were very excited. When we arrived we quickly rushed to the school theatre.

We were introduced by a man who was very loud and energetic, our topic was liquid nitrogen. He did many experiments and explained to us what was happening to each and every object.

What I managed to figure out after he conducted all of the experiments (except the grand finale!), is that when an object gets put in liquid nitrogen, it’s molecules (the small particles that an object is made of) start to change when they are put in the liquid nitrogen because of the cold temperature (-194°c), so that’s why it either shrivels up or becomes hard.

The grand finale was putting water, dish washing soap and liquid nitrogen in a long plastic tube. When the three were combined, a big soap rocket shot out of the tube, which was awesome!

After these experiments, we went on the other side to check out what the Ashdale students had done, which was cool. After that we went back to class. (Maanvik GLA4)

60 Seconds of Science

Students in GLA1, GLA2, GLA4, BLA1 and BLA2 have been working on short science videos to enter in the Science Talent Search competition organised by the Science Teachers’ Association of WA. They have designed investigations and explained the science behind them, all in 60second clips! This is a selection of the clips from years four to year seven.

Science Week Learning Journey

The Year 6/7 students of BLA 1 and 2 have been working in pairs to research a scientist of their choosing. The students found out about how their scientist has influenced the world, from explaining gravity to creating Apple computers to classifying plants and animals. The students used the information that they researched to create a learning journey for the school during Science Week. On Wednesday 13th August the students set up their displays about their scientist in the undercover area for the rest of the school to come and learn about different scientists of the world. The students got to read and watch information about the scientists and then participate in small activities based on the different areas of science that the famous scientists were involved in. These included creating a light bulb, making a light bulb, how the first plane was invented, classifying animal species and word sleuths that include the inventions of the scientist. The year 6/7 students worked hard at creating their learning journey for the rest of the school and it was enjoyed by all.
