From the Principal

Dear Parents and Community

I have once again been pleased to see Madeley students being the best they can be at Interschool Cross Country and Wakakirri recently. It is always great to hear that our students behave in a respectful manner as well as putting in a top effort at these events.

We continue our busy term with Science Week this week and Book Week next week alongside some classes having incursions and excursions. All of these events have a special place in the students’ education as they provide opportunities to put classroom learning into practice. I was particularly impressed with the efforts of the Yr 6/7 students who provided practical, informative and enjoyable learning experiences for other students at the ‘Famous Scientists Expo’.

DLA3 - Assembly

I must congratulate Miss Dunbar and the students of DLA3 Year 3 who, at the last assembly, showed us how a positive, have-a-go attitude helps us achieve more than we ever dreamed possible. It also reminded us to always be the best and do our best we can. These lessons are important for our whole lives not just at school.

Class Placement Requests

Teachers and administration at Madeley PS work together to place students in classes considering many factors. If you feel that you have any educational concerns or extra information for us to consider when looking at class placements for your child/ren please write this in a letter addressed to the Principal, marked Private and Confidential Class Placements 2015 by Friday 5th September.

An example of an educational nature can include – placement of twins; relatives in the same class; family issues that impact on learning; special needs of the child. Parents may be asked for an interview if further clarification is needed regarding the placement. The administration team will consider teachers and parents opinions before finalising class lists by the end of the year. A request is not a guarantee of class placement.

The School Calendar

We have had several requests and queries from parents regarding the Schoolzine Newsletter and I would like to provide you with some additional information which you may not be aware of.

Did you know that you can sync the Madeley School calendar to your personal email account and also some mobiles?

To sync the school calendar:

  • Open the Newsletter email
  • Click on the School Calendar link on the sidebar (if viewing on a computer)
  • or on the menu on your mobile (this appears at the top of the first page on your mobile).
  • At the top of the calendar there is a print button where you can perhaps print off the monthly calendar and pop this on your fridge.
  • Next to the print button there is a sync button, this will allow you to sync the Madeley Calendar to your email programme or mobile.
  • Click on the sync button and follow the steps.

The iphone works particularly well, creating event reminders from the school calendar to your phone. If you require any further information/assistance please contact: tina.drinkell@education.wa.edu.au or Tel. 9302 3611

Wakatastic Time!

On the 6th of August, students from BLA1 and 2, along with Ms G, Mrs Ovens, Mr Taddei and Mr Keunen attended the National Story-Dance competition, Wakakirri at the Regal Theatre in Subiaco. The students had been working hard at perfecting their choreography for their story-dance, “Helios, Phaethon and the sun chariot” over the course of 13 weeks and competed against other primary schools within Western Australia.

The performance, “Helios, Phaethon and the sun chariot”, is the Ancient Greek story of Helios and his son Phaethon. Helios brings out the sun each morning in his golden Sun Chariot, but when Phaethon finally gets his turn to drive the Sun Chariot, things don’t turn out the way he intends. We chose to tell this story as Greek theatre has played an important part in the diverse theatre history and in our Australian Curriculum for drama. It has allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of different genres of theatre, as well as different artistic and cultural contexts as well.

One of the principles of Wakakirri is to practice sustainability. We at Madeley Primary have done well in producing our first ever Wakakirri item where we have experimented with costumes made from scrap materials and recyclable items we found either around our school, community bulk rubbish or discarded industrial materials. We have done our best to keep our carbon footprint small while creating what we feel are amazing costumes and exceptional props. We even managed to make a belt from an old leather couch and a chest plate from Miss G’s old handbag!

Students were commended from several Regal Theatre staff, backstage crew and Wakakirri representatives on their stage professionalism, positive attitude and sportsmanship on the night which awarded Madeley Primary School with the “Best teamwork award” overall, and also the category awards of “Best Group Dance”, “Best Solo Acting” and the “Well-rehearsed Performance” awards. Congratulations students of BLA1 and 2, words cannot express how proud I am of you and your efforts. You gave me goosebumps from watching you and I don’t think you could wipe the smile from my face all night.

A MASSIVE thank you must go to Mrs Emily Bowser and Mrs Sascha Barbaro for not only their costume material donations, but also to their exceptional costume designs. The students from BLA1 and 2 looked fantastic in what you both created and from the bottom of our hearts we thank you so much for the time and effort you put into making our costumes look fabulous.

An ENORMOUS thank you must also go to Mr Nev Etheridge and Mrs Karen Burns for making our moving golden chariot, moon, lighting bolt and weeping willow trees. Your kind donations, the time and effort put into such fantastic props, as well as transporting them to and from the venue allowed our piece to really stand out and assist us in telling our story, and for that we are extremely grateful, thank you so much!

A HUGE thank you to Mrs Heliose Steyn and Mrs Rebecca Mauk for providing platters of food for the performers on the night and for painting our throne, the students were extremely hungry after their hard-work and were very thankful for your donations! A final thank you to Ms Stitfold for giving the students the opportunity to perform in a real theatre, and to show-off our amazing performance skills and Mr Taddei, Mr Keunan and Mrs Ovens for offering their own time to support the students throughout all rehearsals and performances, we couldn’t have done this without you!

Interschool Cross Country

Congratulations to our victorious interschool cross country team. It turns out that after a recount of the scores we won the carnival by 7 points. Every Madeley competitor pushed themselves as hard as they could and left nothing in the tank. I was especially pleased with our sportsmanship and willingness to tackle a tough challenge. In one instance Kayden Mauk assisted a student from another school who was in distress. I had a parent and teacher from another school make comment that Kayden’s assistance was truly appreciated. I would also like to acknowledge Rhys Walker who won the junior boys race and then accepted the challenge to compete in the intermediate race as we were one runner short. Rhys accepted the challenge knowing he would have to run further and compete against students two years older than himself.

Whilst it was fantastic to win the carnival, these two acts and the effort from everyone in the team are what pleased me the most. Keep it up Madeley!

The overall scores were:

1st

Madeley

485pts

2nd

Hawker Park

478pts

3rd

Glendale

424pts

4th

Greenwood

414pts

After the recent Faction Cross Country Carnival there were so many excellent photos to share with parents a further gallery has been included in this newsletter, please see the link below.

Hot Tips for Parenting

Unlike getting your car license, becoming a parent doesn’t come with a system of prerequisite training and licensing to ensure that we have the necessary skills required to navigate the highways and byways of family life before we start!

So where do we learn all the necessary skills?

As a parent of two boys (10yrs and 16yrs old) my partner and I have mostly learnt by trial and error and are grateful that children are actually quite resilient, able to bounce back even when we got it wrong!

However there is wisdom out there to be gleaned without us having to make 100 mistakes for every one thing we get right! One of these places that I have found helpful is www.theparentingplace.com

Often we find ourselves stuck on a particular parenting issue and require some practical strategies to help us move forward. The team of "parenting experts” (Not sure there is such a thing?) at The Parenting Place have created some hot tips and advice for the Early Years, Middle Years, Tweens and Teens.

These include areas such as: The Strong Willed Child, Helping a Worrier, Teaching Self-Control, Sibling-Rivalry, Making Friends, Manners Do Matter, Bullying and a host of other practical tips to get you going in some of these areas.

I am also available on a Monday between 2pm and 3pm should you ever want to chat, all things parenting! Just contact the school office so they can let me know!

Kind Regards
