From the Principal
Dear Parents and Community
Reporting To Parents
Teachers are busy completing the Department of Education formal report Years 1-7 and Portfolios in K/PP, reporting on achievement throughout Semester One. These will go home Wednesday 2nd July. Provided below is some clarification for parents about the reporting framework.
The emphasis in the Early Childhood Years (K-3) is on the development of Literacy; Numeracy; social, emotional and physical well-being; and developing and nurturing positive attitudes to learning.
In the Middle Childhood Years (4-7) there is an emphasis on English and Mathematics and increasing engagement with the other learning areas, with a particular focus on Science and the Humanities and Social Sciences.
Teachers may use a variety of methods for recording assessment information, including anecdotal records; audio and visual recordings; checklists; marking keys; common assessment tasks; portfolios; records of test results; observation notes and Documented Plans (Individual Education Plans and Group Education Plans).
Student achievement for each learning area is reported using the following |
Excellent: The student demonstrates achievement that has greatly exceeded the expected standard. Their achievement is well beyond what is expected at this year level. |
Good: The student demonstrates achievement that exceeds the expected standard. |
Satisfactory: The student demonstrates achievement at the expected standard. |
Limited: The student demonstrates achievement below the expected standard in some areas. |
Very Low: The student demonstrates achievement below the minimum acceptable for this year level. |
Student achievement for each learning area is reported using the following descriptors for Years 3-7; |
A: The student demonstrates achievement that has greatly exceeded the expected standard. Their achievement is well beyond what is expected at this year level. |
B: The student demonstrates achievement that exceeds the expected standard. |
C: The student demonstrates achievement at the expected standard. |
D: The student demonstrates achievement below the expected standard in some areas. |
E: The student demonstrates achievement below the minimum acceptable for this year level. |
Road Safety and Parking Around the School
Crossing between parked cars.
Crossing the road between parked cars is not recommended. The potential for danger of being hit by a car whilst crossing between parked cars is enormous. Drivers cannot always see pedestrians (particularly small children) waiting to cross the road. Parents and children should plan their route to and from school to allow them to cross roads at the safest possible locations such as school crossings, pedestrian islands or traffic lights with pedestrian phasings.
Kiss and Drive
In the morning:
- Move to the forward most bay in the Kiss and Drive area
- Ask your children to get out of the rear left hand side door (the safety door)
- Parents and carers must remain in the vehicle
- When children are clear of the vehicle, indicate and enter traffic flow.
In the afternoon
- Only enter the Kiss and Drive area if you can see your child is ready to be picked up
- Remain in the car with your engine running and handbrake on
- If you cannot see your child, drive on around the roundabouts and rejoin the queue.
Pick up areas
When picking up children in the afternoon, here are a few suggestions for you to help ease traffic congestion around our school.
- Pre arrange a pick up place with your children
- If possible, arrange to meet your children a little further away from the school
- Arrange to meet your children 5 to 10 minutes later than school finish time to avoid congestion.
- If this is not possible, then always attempt to park on the school side of the road to collect your children.
- Use the Kiss and Drive pickup area – if your child is not there, drive on around the roundabouts and rejoin the queue.
- Otherwise park your car further away and walk into the school ground to meet your children.
Double Parking
Double parking is unfortunately a problem that places the lives of our young children at unnecessary risk. Double-parked vehicles are visual obstructions for young children trying to cross to the other side of the road. They also place children getting in or out of the car at risk, as they must venture to the middle of the road to do so. Please refrain from double parking around our school and use the other safer parking options available to you.
Park on which side?
Many of us never give a second thought as to which side of the road we should drop off or collect our children. It is much safer for your children and other motorists if your children leave the car from the rear kerb side door. Your child will know this door as ‘the safety door’. This stops children getting out of the car into oncoming traffic and reduces their risk of being injured. It is safer if you park on the school side of the road. Please take care not to park in the ‘No Parking’ and ‘No Stopping’ areas marked around our school as this places children at unnecessary risk.
Disabled Parking
Disabled parking around the school is reserved for our families at this school who have an ACROD sticker on their car. Unless you have a current ACROD permit please do not park in these places.
Friday 25 July is an important date in your child’s education
If your child is 4 years old by 30 June 2015, starting Year 7, starting Year 8 or changing schools, you need to apply to enrol them in a public school for 2015 by Friday 25 July 2014. All children from Pre-primary to Year 12 are guaranteed a place at their local public school.

ICT Across the Ashdale Cluster Schools.
Madeley Primary School along with our cluster schools has a vision of 21st century learning with Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). We are preparing students for jobs that don’t yet exist…using technologies that haven’t been invented…in order to solve problems we don’t even know are problems yet. To hold information-age jobs students need to think deeply about issues, solve problems creatively, work in teams, communicate clearly in many media, learn ever-changing technologies, and deal with a flood of information. The rapid changes in our world require students to be flexible, to take the initiative and lead when necessary, and to produce something new and useful. The Ashdale Cluster ICT Statement is included for your information.
Kindergarten 2015 – Applications Close 25th July
Kindergarten information packs and Expression of Interest forms are available from the school office for collection.
Kindergarten enrolments opened at the beginning of Term 2 and close 25th July 2014. Children with a birth date between 1st July 2010 and 30th June 2011 are eligible to apply to commence Kindy in 2015.
After the closing date on Friday 25th July the Expressions of Interest are reviewed and letters are sent to parents confirming if a place in Kindy is available.
Play and Learn Programme 2014
Information and application forms are also provided with the Kindy pack regarding the popular Play n Learn sessions which are held as an introduction to Kindy later this year. Parents interested in attending the Play and Learn sessions are required to have their Kindy Expression of Interest and Play and Learn application forms returned together by Friday 27th June 2014 (a month earlier).
The Right Balance Incursion
The Right Balance Incursion was for kids learning about dealing with bullies.
Students from Madeley were encouraged to join in with the fun and be a part of the performance. Rohan Smyth was a talented performer of magic and acting.
He talked about using resilience, bravery, trust, kindness and how to compromise. He demonstrated these skills using ‘Captain Not So Important, Dr Chocolate Sweets’ and himself. Rohan told some inspiring stories about dealing with frustrating times like being bullied.
Rohan was a unique performer who worked well with children; Madeley students really loved his performances. Rohan comes from Sydney and used to perform with the circus. He has amazing skills for acting and is a great magician who is brilliant at juggling. The GLA4 class describes Rohan Smyth’s show as a show stopper.

GLA1 ‘Cinderella’ Assembly
On Friday 6th June GLA 1 performed their assembly item entitled ‘Cinderella’. The well know fairy tale took a few twists and turns in the story line incorporating social media, the use of mobile phones and the way in which people communicate with each other in today’s society. The story line also reinforced the need to be resilient and the use of rewards. Popular music was entwined in the performance and students enjoyed linking the traditional fairy tale to songs that are enjoyed today.
After the performance the class recorded their feelings about their item.
“I loved it and want to do it again!”
“I felt a bit scared before we started but then I enjoyed doing it when the music began.”
“Thanks Mrs Chester!”
“Can we do it again?!”
“I loved getting dressed up.”
“I felt so confident and couldn’t wait to start!”
“My mum didn’t recognise me being dressed as one of the ugly stepsisters!”
“My dad couldn’t stop laughing!”
“I wish it wasn’t over.”
“I can’t believe I did it!”
Year 3’s Step Back In time
It was Friday 13th June 2014 and the Year Three students decided to step back in time when visiting Kalamunda History Village and Stirk Cottage.
They were amazed and enthralled by all the different exhibits. They looked at the early days of the timber industry, the railway engine positioned at the station, the post office, the orchard shed, the blacksmith and the school to name a few. How things have changed!
Stirk Cottage made us think what it would be like to have no stove, no sink in the kitchen and no toilet indoors. How did they survive, we heard ourselves saying.
At the age of two the boys had to sleep outside and when Mrs Stirk went to Guildford Market to sell produce, the children were looked after by the Kangaroo dogs.
We all had an informative time and have come back really appreciating what we have today but admire the hard work by those early pioneers in Western Australia.
Thank you to all the parents who came with us on this historic journey.
