Newsletter 8-8-25
Good afternoon parents and carers,
The end of Term 2 saw our Principal, Lainie Beccegato leaving Madeley Primary School to take up a new position at Currambine PS, a Level 6 school closer to her home. We wish her well in her new adventures. Until we have a new Principal appointed towards the end of this term, I am currently Acting Principal, with Jessica Zabel stepping into the Deputy role for this term.
Term Three has been rushing by already, with this being the conclusion of Week 3. Term 3 is always a busy term, with many events coming up to put in your diaries as outlined below. Please keep an eye out for further information on these events in coming weeks.
Week 5 – Faction Jumps and Throws (Tuesday) and Carnival (Thursday) weather permitting

Week 2 saw the school move over to using Compass for the management of Attendance and Behaviour. The previous SMS messaging for logging student absences is no longer functional, with all attendance to be logged through our email address - Madeley.PS.Attendance@education.wa.edu.au
Parents will receive a notification at 9.30am if your student has an ‘unapproved absence’. Please ensure you click on the link within that notification, to inform the school of the reason for your child absence as soon as possible.
Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
year of schooling
category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
This information assists schools to:
formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.
The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability. Our staff completed the NCCD in Week 1 of this term with all information being submitted at Census in Week 2.
Positive Behaviour Support
Madeley Primary School is well into our transition towards the Department of Education’s recommended framework for management of student behaviour - Positive Behaviour Support (PBS). The PBS team are attending our second phase of Professional Learning today ready to commence the next exciting stage in our PBS journey. There will be more information around this in future newsletters, as the school progresses in this space.
School Bell Times
Our classroom doors open at 8.20am ready for students to begin coming in to class ready to start before the siren at 8.35am. All students should be in class by this time. If your child arrives after the siren they must come through the front office to register their arrival. The earliest students can arrive at school is 8.00am and they must remain at the front office, being monitored by the Education Assistants until 8.20 when they will be released to enter their classrooms. On Fridays all students are to move to the oval for Running Club where they will be supervised.
School finishes at 2.50pm (2.30pm on Wednesday). Students in Kindy and Pre-Primary must be collected by an adult. If you are unable to collect your child/ren by 2.50pm, please enrol your children in Camp Australia for after school care until you are able to collect them.
Enrolments for 2026
The accuracy of our enrolment information, when planning for next year, is of utmost importance. If your child/ren will not be attending Madeley PS for 2026, we kindly ask that you email our front office or phone 9306 6900 as soon as possible to let us know. Additionally, if you know of anyone wishing to join us for 2026, please ask them to contact the front office as soon as possible. Thank you.
Road Safety
The safety of our beautiful Madeley PS children is of critical importance to us all. I ask that parents please take extra caution when travelling around our school at all times. Please drive slowly and be aware of students who may not be paying attention.
Additionally, I kindly ask parents to remind their children to wear helmets, riding their bikes on the correct side of the road and to put mobile phones or other distractors away when walking near or on roads.
Parking
Parking on the grass areas around the school grounds is not permitted. Parking is only permitted in marked bays around the school.
Additionally, a reminder to all parents that the staff carpark is not a Kiss and Ride nor for parking. The Kiss and Ride is right outside of the staff carpark on Martindale Ave and it is this location that parents are permitted to drop off students, if dropping at the front of the school. The staff carpark is only permitted for access by staff and other visitors to the school, who are not family members or carers of students.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Libby Clark

School Chaplain
Dear Families,
As we journey through Week 3 of this term, I want to share some reflections inspired by the spirit of Aussie Optimism, a remarkable mental health promotion program thriving across Western Australian schools.
What is Aussie Optimism?
Aussie Optimism is an evidence-based program developed to support children and young people in building emotional resilience and positive mental health. Rooted in cognitive behavioural principles, it teaches practical skills such as identifying and managing feelings, challenging negative thinking, developing social skills, and fostering empathy and optimism.
Each week/fortnight, students engage in activities that help them pause, reflect, and reframe their thoughts, much like taking a deep breath before responding — a simple yet powerful tool in everyday life, as YouthCARE chaplain Jenny Palandri experienced firsthand.
Why Aussie Optimism Matters to Us as Chaplains
In our chaplaincy roles, supporting the wellbeing of children and families aligns deeply with our calling to care for the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. Aussie Optimism complements this by empowering students to overcome challenges such as peer pressure, anxiety, and self-doubt through hope-filled, optimistic thinking.
By encouraging positive explanatory styles — the way individuals explain events to themselves — the program helps children see setbacks not as failures, but as opportunities for growth and redirection.
A Story of Impact
One inspiring testimony comes from a young student who said, “I learned how to pause and take a breath before saying something so it wouldn’t come out the wrong way. It helped me understand how others feel.” This simple practice fosters empathy, kindness, and stronger relationships — exactly the values we cherish and wish to see flourished.
“Optimism is a happiness magnet. If you stay positive, good things and good people will be drawn to you.” – Mary Lou Retton

Bullying - Support For Your Child At Home
If your child is being bullied, you should always take action.
Give your child as much support and love as you can at home, while you, the teacher and your child come up with a plan for fixing the bullying. Let your child know that the situation is not their fault, and it can be fixed.
Talk to your child about some of the different ways of dealing with bullying behaviour and why these work. This will help your child feel more confident and less powerless about being bullied.
Some ideas:
Ignore it and move away from the Encourage your child to physically remove themselves from children who are teasing or bullying.
Tell the bully to stop. Standing up to bullies in a calm way lets them know that what they are trying to do is not working.
Avoid high-risk By keeping away from situations where bullying occurs, your child can avoid the attention of bullies – as long as they are not missing out on activities because of this.
Stay around other people. It can help to have others around to protect your child if they are feeling threatened.
Ask other people for support. Others probably understand what your child is going through and are likely to help if needed. Bullies are less likely to strike if they can see that your child has backup.
Tell the teacher. Your teacher will be able to help your child deal with the problem, and come up with a plan. The bully might not even know that the teacher is helping your child.
Make sure the area is no longer burning and apply first aid immediately. Hold the burnt area under cold water for 20 minutes for all burn types.
Remove any jewellery and clothing unless stuck to the area.
Cover the area with a non-adhesive dressing and seek medical assistance.
Seek medical assistance for burns that are deep and causing no pain, are larger than a 20 cent piece, or involve face, hands, airways or genitals. Seek medical assistance if you are unsure of the severity.
Chickenpox
Chickenpox is caused by the Varicella Zoster Virus. In some children the illness will start with a fever or feeling unwell, but in others the rash will appear first.
The spots usually start on the chest as red, itchy lumps. These will become fluid-filled blisters, which will burst and form a crust.
Chickenpox is very contagious and is spread when the person sneezes or coughs or when someone comes in contact with the fluid from one the blisters. Your child should have had the chickenpox vaccination at 18 months of age. Vaccination is the best way to avoid chickenpox, so make sure that your child is up-to-date with his or her vaccinations.
If your child does contract chickenpox, keep him or her home from school for at least five days after the first spots appear, and until after all blisters are dry. Give your child plenty of fluids and paracetamol or ibuprofen, if needed. If blisters are in the mouth, try a soothing mouth wash and don’t give foods high in acid or salt. Soothing lotions or oils for the bath can help the itch.
Diagnosis should be confirmed by a doctor as chickenpox is a notifiable disease (it must be reported). Please make sure the school is informed if the doctor diagnosis chickenpox.
