I would like to thank Kylie Reeves for acting as Principal in my absence. It is fabulous to be back at school and see how settled all the staff and students are. It looks like it has been a wonderful start to 2024. We have lots on our school calendar for the remainder of the term including NAPLAN which starts next week. With Madeley On The Green and Harmony Day still to come it will be a busy but very fun finish to Term One.
NAPLAN: Next week NAPLAN begins for our Year 3 and Year 5 students. Parents have been notified of which days the tests will be on, they are different for each year level. The NAPLAN testing is intuitive whereby if students answer several questions correctly, the test adapts to provide more challenging questions. Equally if students are getting several answers incorrect, the test adapts to provide easier questions for them.
Please ease any concerns for students by reminding them simply to try their best, that’s all that we ask. Please support your children by ensuring that they have a good breakfast and early bedtime. Among its many benefits, NAPLAN data provides valuable information to schools to identify students’ individual and specific needs, assists us to identify any trends/gaps in learning across year levels that we can address as a school. It also assists us to track how we are doing as a school, compared to other schools of similar context and Socio-Economic Index, as well as how we track compared to the Australian Mean. Additionally, we track students from On-Entry Testing in Pre-Primary to NAPLAN Year 3, 5, 7, and 9 against what their expected progress should be, to support us to enable students to make expected progress from one testing period to the next. As you can see this data is incredibly useful data which we use to plan for improvement.
School Board: Our School Board is a group of parents and staff who support the strategic directions of our school. They are involved with reviewing policy and analysing school data to support the general directions of the school. I would like to thank Mrs Christine Ashkenazy, and Miss Katie Cawthorne who have completed their tenure on the School Board in 2023. I would like to thank them for their contributions to the Madeley PS Board.
I would like to welcome Mr Anshul Sharma (parent rep) and Mrs Anita Vague (staff rep) for nominating as new members of the School Board for the next three years.
School Board 2024 members include:
Matthew White - parent
Joe Madaferri - parent
Anshul Sharma - parent

Michelle De Luca - parent
Kevin Raykos - parent
Anita Vague – staff
Sally Price – staff
Tania Smart – staff
Kylie Reeves – staff, and
Lainie Beccegato – Principal
Student Absences: In accordance with our communication policy, we ask parents to only communicate student absences through our school’s SMS messaging service which is 0437 419 118. Please SMS the student name, reason and date/s of absence.
This policy is designed to reduce the workload of teachers. Please do not email absentee notifications to teachers directly.
SMS notifications are the required process for school absences due to sickness or appointments. Please note that it is a legal requirement that all absences from school be adequately explained. We ask that all student absences are explained to the school that morning.
Our SMS messaging service will send out a message at 9:30am to notify parents who have children absent, where the school has not been informed. Please note that it is also a requirement that extended absences through family holidays or activities be pre-approved by the Principal.
Madeley on the Green: We are all looking forward to having a fabulous evening at Madeley on the Green on 16th March from 4.00pm to 8.00pm. This year the event takes place on a Saturday, providing a greater ease of set up without impacting the students throughout the school day.
The Madeley P&C put on an amazing event – with food trucks, carnival rises, market stalls, live entertainment and more. We hope to see you all there. It is an annual event that is not to be missed.
Parent Interview Afternoon: Madeley Primary will be implementing whole school Parent Teacher Interviews this year. This will be in lieu of the afterschool Parent Information sessions, usually held early Term 1.
On March 26, 2024 Madeley will close and students will be dismissed at 11:45am. Please keep your eyes out for further information regarding how to book your interviews, which will be coming out next week.
Before and After School Play :A friendly reminder that playing on the play equipment before school is not permitted. After school, on the proviso that parents directly supervise their children, children are permitted to play on the ECE & MLA play equipment after the school bell until 3:10pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and 2:45pm on Wednesdays. After this time, we ask all parents to kindly vacate the school grounds as the gates will be locked.
Parking: Our students’ safety is our primary concern. Therefore, safe and legal parking around our school continues to be an ongoing concern. We kindly remind all parents to do the right thing by driving and parking safely and legally around our school. Kiss-and-Drive bays are not for parking and should be vacated as quickly as possible to maintain the flow of traffic. However, they can be parked in between 9:30am – 2:20pm. Parking in the driveway of the Pre Primary car park and on pathways is also illegal and has resulted in safety concerns. Please be patient and wait until a car bay becomes available. Patience, kindness and respect are all virtues we need to model when driving and parking around our school. We thank you for your consideration.
Harmony Day: Harmony Day will be celebrated on Friday 22nd March. This is an opportunity for the school to celebrate the diversity our school community, celebrating people of all different cultures. Students are asked to come dressed in either Orange – the colour associated with Harmony Week, or in their traditional cultural dress.
Free Dress Day: Wednesday 27th March will see the school holding a Free Dress Day, raising funds for the Year 6 graduation. Students are invited to come in ‘normal’ clothes in place of their uniform for the day, along with a gold coin donation.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Lainie Beccegato
Principal

MLA2 Self Portraits
Our Year 2 students in MLA2 have been busy working on some beautiful self portraits! A self portrait gives children the time to study their eyes, nose, mouth and the rest of their face and body, and to work out how it all fits together – perfect for teaching children how to draw basic body shapes. The students watched a video of an artist, who gave them different ways of drawing different features. They are all so unique, and capture the children well, some very accurately.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB
There has been a delay in dispatching our Scholastic Book Club orders from catalogue 1; however the good news is they are now on their way!
Catalogue 2 has also been delayed and the close off date is Thursday 14th of March which is a very short window to get your orders in. We will distribute the catalogue as soon as we get them.
In the meantime, you can follow this link to have a look at the digital catalogue.
This term we began by exploring the “5 Principles of Creative Learning” developed by Form’s Perth-based Creative Learning Team. These are:
Collaboration
Persistence
Discipline
Inquisitiveness
Imagination
With these in mind, Yr 5-6 students began the year with a simple fun creative strategy called ‘blind contour drawing’; where they could only look at what they were drawing and not take their pencils off the page. This created some fabulously unusual results that we further developed using the principle of scale and elements of line, shape and colour, creating a bunch of wonderful masterpieces! Students loved getting into it, drawing musical instruments, each other, me 😊, and my fab blue stereo. DLA5's artwork is on display in the front office.
This exercise covered all 5 of the creative learning principles, as students had to work together, stick to the rules of the task, expand their understanding of what looks “right”, persist when the going got tough and engage their interest in the process to get the best results. As we move on to learn about how artists work and the many ways one can express ideas, this was a fabulous way to begin their 2024 creative journey.
Pre-Primary students have been busy learning about collage and creating texture. So, they’ve been busy gluing, scrunching and overlapping to create their fabulous garden snails… Enjoy the pics of our work so far!
Thanks and kindest regards,

2024 Interschool Cricket Carnival
Congratulations on a great effort to our four Year 5/6 Cricket Teams, who took part in an Interschool Cricket Carnival on Thursday, 29th February, at Kingsway Reserve.
All our teams represented Madeley Primary School very well, displaying great sportsmanship throughout the day. We won many games and the students were able to improve their skills in a competitive environment.
Well done to all the teams.
