Welcome back to the 2024 school year. What a busy start it has been. Unfortunately, we have started the year without Lainie Beccegato at the helm, as she is recovering from a broken ankle and is currently on leave. We wish her a speedy recovery and will hopefully be seeing her back at school soon.
This is our first newsletter for 2024 and I would like to welcome everyone back to Madeley Primary School for Term 1. I hope all students and their families had a wonderful Christmas and holiday period. I would like to welcome back Mrs Lauren French and Mrs Karin Villermin who are both returning from leave. We would like to give a special welcome to our new teaching staff;
Mrs Megan Mileham, Pre Primary Teacher Mrs Jessica Mance, Year 2/3 Teacher Mrs Sonal Amba, Year 4 Teacher Cloe Mitchell Pre Primary Education Assistant
We hope you enjoyed the Meet and Greet at the beginning of the school year. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to meet their teachers and begin settling into their classrooms. The feedback from staff and parents was again very positive.
A letter went home via Seesaw earlier in the week to inform parents of our Parent Interview Afternoon later in the term. This event will be in lieu of the afterschool Parent Information sessions, usually held early Term 1.
The Assistant Director of Education, Steven Watson, approved Madeley Primary’s application to close the school early on March 26, 2024, enabling staff to conduct parent interviews throughout the afternoon until 6:00pm. This proposal was then successfully endorsed by Madeley’s School Board. Therefore, on March 26, 2024 Madeley will close and students will be dismissed at 11:45am. Further communication will come out later in the term detailing how to book interview sessions. In the event parents are unable to collect their child, the school will organise supervision for the duration of the normal school day. We look forward to this new event.
The start of the year is a great time to remind the community of some important school items to assist with the smooth running of the school.
Parking: The safety of our students is critical to us at MPS. Safe and legal parking is an ongoing issue at our school; therefore, we remind all parents to please do the right thing by driving and parking safely and legally around our school. Kiss-and-Drive bays are not for parking and should be vacated as quickly as possible to maintain the flow of traffic. Parking in the staff car park, disabled bays or on pathways or grass around the school is illegal and results in damage to our reticulation, safety concerns as well as damaged cars. Please be patient and wait until a car bay becomes available.
Staff Carpark: A reminder that the staff carpark is only permitted for access by staff and other visitors to the school, who are not family members or carers of students. The Kiss and Ride is right outside of the staff carpark on Martindale Ave, and it is this location that parents are permitted to drop off students, if dropping at the front of the school.
Student Absences: If your child is absent, please notify the school of the absence date, reason, and your name via text message only to 0437 419 118 before 8.30am. The office staff will put this information into our system. Please do not notify class teachers.
Family Holidays during school term: We encourage families to take their holidays during the school term breaks. However, we understand that occasionally there are extenuating circumstances where this is not possible. If parents are planning holidays during the term, parents are required to submit the Leave of Absence Request Form, two weeks prior to the absence. This form is found on our website under forms. This leave will then be reviewed by the principal prior to approval.
Early Arrivers: Please remember students are not to be arriving at school before 8.00am. All students who are at school before the classroom doors open at 8.20am MUST wait at the office being supervised by school staff, even if waiting with a parent.
Uniforms: A reminder that all students must wear their school uniform at all times, including a broad-brimmed school hat at all lunch and recess times, in support of our ‘No Hat, No Play” policy. This policy is in place all year round. In addition, we ask that parents also ensure that all bike shorts are an acceptable length of mid- thigh to knee length. Shoulder length and longer hair must be tied up. Acceptable jewellery for students are studs and sleepers. Please label all uniform items to ensure that are returned if they are lost.
Students with Mobile Phones: It is not recommended that primary school children are regularly bringing mobile phones to school. However, some parents provide phones so that students can contact them after school. All students who need to bring along a mobile phone MUST first have an application form completed and signed by their parents and handed to the classroom teacher. Students are not permitted to use mobile phones during school hours. Phones must be given to the classroom teacher at the beginning of the day and then collected at the end of the day. Students seen using mobile phones will have them confiscated and returned to their parent/s. Please see classroom teachers for permission forms. We remind parents that if you need a message to get to your child during the school day, you are required to contact the school office.
With the collective dedication of our committed teachers, staff, and involved families, I am sure the year ahead will be filled with discovery and exceptional experiences for our students.

Yarning Circle
Construction of Madeley's newest outdoor space took place in the January school holidays. The Yarning Circle is an opportunity for Madeley Primary School to plant the seeds of hope, on Whadjuk country, creating a welcoming and inclusive outdoor space for all members of the school and local community to enjoy. Our teachers worked closely with Yarning Circles Australia, to create an additional area where students and staff can sit and share in a safe space, tell their truths, without judgement. It is inspired by the history of our local area, and the artwork created by the school by local Aboriginal artist, Kevin Bynder. Terry, from Yarning Circles Australia, worked closely with a local Aboriginal elder to ensure the space was culturally activated and respected from its conception. The large circular shape represents the Yellagonga waterways, where families would meet and rest as they moved from the hills to the coastal plains at the change of season. This allows the space to be usable by class groups, while smaller pods off the side of the large circle allow for smaller groups and more intimate conversations.
Our yarning circle is an extension of the existing Waabinup nature playground. This project was made possible from both a grant from the Schools Upgrade Fund and school funds. We are hopeful that we can source additional grant funding to complete stage two later this year. We look forward to installing our school art project alongside it soon.
GLA1 - Magnificent Owls
In GLA 1 we have been learning about owls as part of our getting to know you activities. Owls are one of Mrs Kavarnos's favourite animals and represent wisdom and learning.
Table Tennis
A huge thankyou to the P & C for sourcing two table tennis tables for our students to use. These were being removed from another school and the P&C kindly organised for them to be delivered to Madeley PS, adding an exciting new addition to both the Year 6 area and to the general playground space. The students have been having a fabulous time playing on them, when the weather is not too hot!
